Well, hey, since Soda is now sold in plastic bottles, that looks like a GREAT idea. Too bad I'm a teetotler ! ! ! I guess I will have to find some beer guzzling friends ! ;) :p

It looks like the containers are already empty. Maybe if asked, the seller could ship do-it-yourself containers still full of the original contents. Keep the shipping charge at $25 though.

Methinks he imbibed in one (probably several) too many "insulators" when he started the listing. Somehow, I don't think ePay would be thrilled at such a stunt.
Then again, better such matters on the 'Net than on the air. Perhaps the FCC needs to add a subsection to §Part 97 about OWI. (Operating While Intoxicated?)

I'm semi-serious, however. I can remember putting a 33 foot long aluminum pole on top of a soda-pop bottle, and supporting it over a radial field spread out in the ground. I used rayon rope as the "guy wires", and I mean to say that it worked like a charm! It cost a heck of a lot less than a commercial vertical antenna!

However, a good, strong glass bottle/insulator is getting to be harder and harder to find, now days.

Nylon funnel. . . . I wonder what else would make a good base insulator ? ? ?

As I sit here, composing this post, I'm drinking from a "Snapple"(tm) bottle. . . . hmmmm !

Hello.

The old bottles were made out of much better glass in the old days, when the bottles were returned and refilled.
I have used coca cola bottles for light bulbs in the past.
Modern bottles simply implode under the pressure.
One can pour concrete into the bottle, to make the insulator stronger, but I would try to start with a better bottle to begin with.

Funny. I'm surprised that the eBay "member name" made it through their censorship filter. It must not be programmed to check for naughty Spanish words! :)

In Mexico, beer bottles, like these Coronas, are still returned to the distributor for reimbursement and reuse.

In the wake of high oil prices, I would be GLAD to see the glass soda bottle come back!

as a kid in the 80's we would take our long neck bottles up to the store, I loved those bottles as a kid.

Use of "old beverage bottles" as insulators for such antennas as ground-mounted verticals are almost as old as Marconi, and have been in the Handbook and Antenna Handbook for years. But it probably IS true that in years gone by (when soda WAS in glass bottles) the glass was probably thicker and thus stronger.
But I doubt there are (or were) any beverage bottles that would support the weight of actual tower legs of any appreciable height. A single radiator for a vertical might not be too much weight for a beer bottle, but use under a tower leg is just begging for trouble. Ans SHOULD one such insulator fail, it could lead to catastrophic failure of the tower and whatever skyhook is mounted atop the tower.

That's 100% Mexican... Here in Dominican Republic it means nothing at all, it's probably the same in Cuba and P.R.

Chingaderas... only sounds funny :D

Chingadera is like a "thingy" you don't have a word for i.e. "whats that chingadera over there?" Pure Tex-Mex.

In Cozumel and Cancun, bottles like these are often refilled with God knows what, and then sold to cruise ship gringos by street vendors.

I'm sure if you used empty Guinness bottles, they'd work a lot better.

Check out any homebrew supplier for glass bottles. ;)

Or go buy a case of long necks at the party store. :D

The bidding has ended with zero bids, so apparently it was too obvious that the insulators were a cheap brand name. Bidding would probably have been brisk if he had first sprayed the insulators with white Krylon.

Well considering that there were no bids, perhaps there is some hope that sanity still rules! ( at least a little bit !)

Considering the bottles under a TOWER, I wouldn't EVER do that, but a heavier bottle under a 33 foot pole still is an OK idea. I bet there were untold numbers of verticals that were supported that way, many years ago.

Around here it's 'fafongo'.

I wonder if Corona bottles have anything to do with the 'corona effect'?

Also, would it be prudent to use Bud Ice in the northern parts of the world?

If your looking for a sturdy bottle for a base support I suggest you invest in a bottle of Chimay Ale. I'ts an excellent ale and is brewed by trappist monks so God won't get POed at you for drinking it.:D

The local Wally-World sells Mexican Coca Cola in glass bottles, I will gladly purchase as many base insulators that you want and ship them to you either empty or full, your choice...there, of course, will be a shipping and handling fee involved. :D

OK, I'll bite. What's the difference between Mexican Coca Cola, and the good old American type ?

Usta be that Coke was bottled somewhat locally, to avoid long distance transportation costs, so it would taste somewhat different depending on the quality of the water in a particular area. Is there something special about Mexican Coke ? ? ?

Just curious! 73, Jim

Hello.

Mexican coke, no, not the white powder, ;) has real sugar, and not that corn syrup.
The bottles are the old, blue-green glass, and thick.
We can get Mexican coke, both kinds, all over Texas.
Perhaps that is what is wrong with GW, no Mexican coke in DC?

Other than giving you a good case of Montezuma's revenge I can't think of any differences.

Jim,

While the water amd sugar may make a difference I think the biggest difference is the Mexican coke comes in glass. I really don’t remember when the last time I bought a coke locally that came in a glass bottle.

how about sugar cane instead of High fructose corn syrup, I know you still can get the "original" Dr. Pepper made with sugar cane... and really I avoid High fructose corn syrup as much as possible.

You can taste the difference between sugar cane and corn syrup.:(

I go to a lot of Mexican taquerias for lunch (once you've had authentico, there's no going back), and you can get lots of soft drinks with glass bottles at a tienda mexicana. I prefer non-sugary drinks, and about the only thing diet that's stocked at these places is Fresca. Everything's in a bottle. I may be imagining it, but the Mexican Coca-Cola tastes like it has more sugar in it to me.
