View Full Version : CQoogle.com - the Ham Search Engine

A news site has been launched this week dedicated to hams.

The Ham only search engine has been designed with acleverset of Algorithms meaning what ever is entered into the search box, will be filtered and only ham radio results are seen. the challenge is to test it against google!

The site creators who are also responsible for the launch of HamBid.com say the tuning has taken some time but the results were worth it.

The key benefit being any Ham looking for a particular subject, will not have to sift through lots of 'false positives' as they would on other search engines.

I don't understand the purpose of this search engine, but entering the search term, "Britney Spears" returns ample non-ham fodder. I think the search algorithm needs some work.

And how long until the cease and desist lawyers for Google arrive on your doorstep?

After getting 30,000 page view yesterday (after les than a week online) we decided to mve the site to it's own server. The domain was shifted from it's previous IP address to the new one and whilst doing so, for a few hours (can be as much as 24 hours) issues can arise. This said, it looks like the whole site and DNS has now shifted. RDNS though has not and may take a little longer.

Not at all ... but with a search engine named "oogle" you've got to expect that the nice folks at Google won't be amused...

How's about opening a new fast-food hamburger joint and calling it, "Urger King"?

It doesn't count when 29,000 are from you checking to see if the server is still up! Either show unaltered AWStats or don't bother mentioning. Still, the claim is a hoot.

Ill be brave enough to go out on a limb and say, we will never see any stats, real stats from a generator.

I think the site is a great idea, but I do see problems down the road. When I see CQoogle, I think of Google. Most people will. Both sites are search engines. The first thing that crossed my mind was that the site was indeed connected to Google in some way. These factors alone are "red flags" when it comes to determining if there is a trademark violation. I'm not a lawyer and I don't even play one on QRZ.com, but I'm betting that you will hear from Google. If I'm not mistaken, they really have no choice but to take action to protect their trademark, or risk losing it. Perhaps a real lawyer will chime in.

I really like the idea, im not sure what void its filling but its interesting, nevertheless. I must agree, Google is too big to let this go, we are a nation of litigation...we are probably the only country that has a large (and i mean "large") percentage of people who try to make a living by suing everything that moves...coffee too hot? sue them!! Floor too wet? Call my lawyer!! Large companies and organizations in the United States are now so sensitive to any litigation from people trying very hard to NEVER lift a finger to do a real job, they will put all sorts of stupid warning labels on their products to protect us from our own ignorance, among many other things that they never used to have to do. Not to mention, they will hire lawyers who are very good, they will scour the world to make sure their clients interests are maintained and secured.

After they find out about you, and it could take a little while, Google will probably watch you for a bit to see if you have any monetary potential, if so, then they will throw some money at you to obtain the rights to the name and all that goes with it...if not, then you will be getting that C-n-D letter. Just my guess, of course.

I dont think anyone here is being overly negative, even though these boards tend to allow that (QRZ has cleaned things up quite a bit, in all fairness), i think these hams are just pointing out things that seem obvious. I would think of an alternative, equally clever name for when that letter comes in, you can shift gears and keep rolling.

And did i see you just applaud and give kudos to yourself at the top of the thread?? Now that IS goofy. :o

Either way, i like the site, its very well done. I went there and i did bookmark it...just let us know when you change the name.

I really like the idea, im not sure what void its filling but its interesting, nevertheless.

In the first day online (and advertised on sites like QRZ.com) the site saw 2000 unique visitors and 50,000 pages viewed. It is growing very fast so it fills a gap for many people somewhere!

The interesting thing is, I decided it was a pain searching Goolge, Yahoo etc and having to sift through loads of stuff that was off topic. Then you start to code and realise the problem.

There truly are millions and millions of pages on the intended search subject and 100's millions more. If you have the filters too tight, you loose stuff on topic. If it is too wide, you get what you get else where. We have come to a 'happy medium and hopefully, we can hone this over the coming months. I say we as I have a number of developers wokring on the subject to get it where it needs to be.

Like a search engine, I have to sift through the 'Always-negative-hams-never-a-good-word-to-say-about-anything' people and the genuine constructive critics which I will listen to. The rest just get a laugh and a stab on the delete key!

Excellent point Dave!

In days gone by hams called each other by their "handles" and sent "73s" to one an other...

Today, the stuffed-shirts tell newbies that hams don't use "handles" and we don't send "73s" which is okay though it bucks nearly a century of tradition and smacks of elitism...

I agree, i really dont get angry when a ham puts "73's" in their tagline or qsl, i can think of about 10 million other things to get upset about.

Seriously, i know what they are trying to say and its never anything negative...but i guess if you live your life on a negative basis, everything will have a negative slant to it. I just dont live my life that way.

Now,

I don't know about you, but if I had a handle I'd be a teapot, frying pan or luggage, LOL! Still though, it's better than first personal.

I've always used just 73 or 88 to mean Best Regard and Hugs & Kisses. That's better too than hearing someone being called a Dirty, low-down, yellow-bellied, egg-suckin' dog! or worse. I always operated, as my elmer's from the 1950's did...respectful, polite, and friendly.

Too much time is being spent on slamming "CB'er's" and "No-Coder's". Instead of jumping them on-the-air or at club meetings, why not teach them better? If necesssary, I'll call someone on the telephone, send them a private e-mail or speak to them in a friendly, gentle, manner and give them the opportunity to change or not. Simple.

Now, Justin, while the idea is commendable, I do think that GOOGLE will be very protective of it's trademark name and whomever is at GOOGLE will unleash a Battalion of Barrister's at whomever has done this.

I do hope someone picks up AC6V's website. He recently became an S/K and was a real Prince of a fellow. I see you like to work 6 meters. Well, I hope we can make a contact sometime on 6.

Respectfully submitted,

Currently (not wishing ot use third person plural) a new release is being put together and will be online by this weekend.

In the main the current is not able to handle the huge traffic requests being seen when the USA comes online first thing in the morning. It is not a server or bandwidth issue, it is the PHP script (not very well written, sorry).

The current version extracts and filters data from just one of the major search engines. The next will take from 5 major engines, apply the filters etc and present the data. It will also have it's on spidering tool for specific sites we see of interest to the ham along with an listing area for amateurs to include their own sites.

This may mean down time and seeing an 'updating site' banner for a while. perhaps later today or Friday.

Stay tuned!

Good day all!

Version 2.0 is now live! If there are any bugs, please let me know but I think it is all there just about. There will be a few more features added over the next day or two but inthe main it is there.

One of the main addtions in this release is the ability to add and index your own site. Whilst for any search you do on the engine, it will look and search the major engines, filter the responses and display, these manually added indexes will be spidered and sorted locally.

Enjoy....

Morning Guys!

Well, that's what I always heard as a kid growing up in the early 50's. Most all folks didn't curse in front of kids or ladies, so I guess it was a substitute. But, they always prefaced it by saying, I'm gonna call you by the lowest thing one person can call another! and afterwards saying, An, I don't HAVE to talk about yore Momma! :p ;) ROFLMAO! By calling you that, you were lower than whale poop at the bottom of the Marrianna's (sp?) Trench, 7 miles down, the deepest hole in the Earth! Now that's LOW.

Funny how things seem to stick with you when you're a kid. Mom used to say, Aww, Heads of Lettuce! when she was mad or frustrated and my little Cajun Grandmother would say in French, Tonnerre mieene chien! Thunder my dog! I know, it doesn't make sense, but that's what they did back then to keep from cursing. Wonderful idea, huh?

I remember a cartoon once that the character seemed to say, Aww, Sniddy Rot-o-Fruttz!. Now that's funny.

Well, it's FRIDAY, TGIF, and for you Dallas Cowboy fans, that stands for Toes Go In Furst. I'll be on 29.101.0 (29 Ten-Ten AM) if anyone wants me.

Respectfully,

FYI CQtube is hosted on a dedicated (not shared) server which has a 2.6ghz Quadcare CPU. It used 4gb of 800mhz ram and 1TB of disk space. it also has a 1gb direct internet connection in the DC which is at less than 1% utilization.

What does this all mean? If you do not get acceptabe speeds, you don't pay enough for your Internet conection!

of course, the quality of the network (and all the peering points in between) and of the connectivity of your data center matters, too.

if your gigabit connection is hovering at less than 1% utilization then maybe the traffic isn't getting to you ... or maybe nobody's going there!

right now, for me, the thumbnail pages could be a bit zippier but the rest loads quite nicely.
