Had to google that one. Some sites call it the "remotest island in the world", with one island in the archipelago named Inaccessible Island.
Good luck, Tom, hope to work you!
Tom you are going to stick out like a sore thumb. :D
per Wikipedia:
On Tristan da Cunha the population of 269 (BBC News) people share just seven surnames: Glass, Green, Hagan, Lavarello (a typical Ligurian surname), Repetto (another typical Ligurian surname), Rogers and Swain. There are 80 families on the island.
Good Luck and look forward to seeing you on the bands.

Hi Tom!! Now you are going to somewhere I really REALLY NEED!!!! ZD9 is the last entity I need in all of that part of the world, and I have been trying for 40 years to contact there!!! But don't know my chances with a G5RV. I sure want to find out when you will be on, so I can give it a shot. I have worked ZD7 on 6 meters, wouldn't that be great to do it there too! So you will be REAL popular on ZD9. Get prepared for Tremendous pileups, as that is one of the rarest places on Earth!!!

Tom ZD7X what frequencies are you on and days/time (in UTC). I like to work you and I have a good chance since I'm on the NJ shoreline 1/2 mile from the Atlantic on Absecon Island (Atlantic City is on the island).

Damn Tom.......You sure do get around !!!!!!!!
Good luck and be safe on the trip. I sure hope to hear you there.
Good DX !!!!!!
I sure do wish I could do what you're doing! I love the idea of visiting remote locations like that, much less, putting them on the air for a while.
But the geography comment is spot on. One thing about DXing and HF operating in general is it does give you a much better sense of geography than most people walking around out there.
Good luck out there... and I hope you can take and post a lot of pictures, too!

Do a search for ZD7X
That's how I found him
As for working him from NJ, doable but you need a good antenna. He's running a vertical and 100w.

Tom,
Just worked you on St Helena for the first time and now you are island hopping again?
I am going for the "Worked All Tom" award.
Ever think about changing your name to Vlad? :D:D:D
Let's see - worked Tom on 30, 15, 20 (CW), 15 and 17 (SSB).
Don't have a decent antenna for the low bands.
Let's see - worked Tom on 30, 15, 20 (CW), 15 and 17 (SSB).
Worked him on 15m SSB during CQWW last year and today on 20m SSB.
Would love to try for him on 40m or 75m SSB. Should be do-able.

Only ZD9 I ever heard was ZD9BE, back in around '64-'65. Was doing some work on the transmitter, and the receiver was somewhere on 20 CW. I heard a station tuning, followed by an immediate CQ....de ZD9BE. I hurried with the transmitter ;) just knowing there was going to be a HUGE pileup in seconds--but nobody answered him. Got the transmitter warming up, and was able to call him after his third CQ. We had a nice, uninterrupted QSO for about ten minutes. He was the new "postmaster" for Tristan. His antenna was a random wire just stretched out on the ground while he waited for the rest of his supplies to arrive from Cape Town. The ground conductivity, he said, was nil, and it was just as effective lying on the ground as it would have been at fifteen feet or so, which was as high as he could get it at the time.
Have a good trip, Tom! 73.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys.
Yes, Tristan should be a good one. There has not been any real DX activity from Tristan since 2000 when a amateur from the UK did some operating from ZD9 land.
I'm waiting on transportation from Cape Town to Tristan at the moment. The fishing ship that servives Tristan is full (12 bunks) for it's monthly voyage to Tristan until June of this year...........Have no fear, I WILL GET THERE!!!
Future plans after Tristan are putting the islands of South Sandwich, South Georgia & South Okney on the air. I hope to stage this operation out of the Falkland islands. This will be a MAJOR operation by myself & is in the planning stages right now.
I'm just short of 30,000 QSO's as ZD7X right now. My goal is at least 60,000 QSO's from here before I depart for Tristan.
I'm now once again active on 160 CW after a minor bump in the road on that band. Thanks to the hundreds who have worked me on 160.

I just wonder what kind of job you have, Tom, that lets you go to the Premier DX Locations in the world? I need a job like that!!! Do they have any more openings? Now, a 6 month stay on Scarlborough Reef might not be too much fun, but they'd need a Bulldozer to move the QSL cards around after I got back!

Tom,
You beginning to sound like VLAD !!!!!
I NEED all those islands, so keep an ear out for the weakest signal on any band.
Have fun Tom and hope to work you while you are there. I'll be in the pile-up somewhere. I received your card today from St. Helena. Thanks!! Again hope you have a safe and very enjoying trip, and like some of the guys have said take lots of pics.
