Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement, who taught the Beatles to meditate, made "mantra" a household word in the 1970s and built a multimillion-dollar empire on a promise of inner harmony and world peace,
He came from the east...
He founded a religion that claims to result in inner peace...
You have to believe some far-out things...
He ended up with a very wealthy organization...
But nobody tortured anybody or started wars in his name.
Makes other similar religion originators look bad by comparison.

Well, I'll miss him. He came in peace, made a lot of money and got famous for it, and gave a great speech at woodstock where there was "nothing but 3 days of peace and music,."

Its quite amazing how these leaders of religious cults who profess to be men of simple needs can amass great wealth. There have been many in the US, they all have names with double letters like Bakker, and money flows towards them in a torrent. It said in the paper that the Marharishi was worth two billion quid. Not bad for an old chap who just said "peace be with you brother". I've said for years there's too much money sloshing around and its treated like Mickey Mouse money.

Day after day, alone on the hill, the man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still....
:eek: Woah dude, that guy was *still* alive! after watching the Beatles anthology in the mid 90's, I thought for sure he was far gone, this is creepy.
but the question still remains, did he make a move on Cynthia? I always wondered why the Beatles abandoned him so quickly?

The Maharisi is/was a phoney. How do I know this ? Because I know and understand that anyone who is committed to inner peace and pure virtue cannot amass material wealth. If the Maharisi were truly a good man then he would have committed himself to a life of material poverty. Unless one can transcend the material world and live a life free of all those things then he is not truly a man of virtue.
Show me a man who has surrendered all his material wealth and possessions and who walks in rags yet holds within a wealth of inner peace and good will you will have found a man who is true. But if he does not walk in poverty then he is not the man of virtue he claims.

No idea. Surprising to many I am not a Beatles fan and never followed them closely. I do belive it had something to do with "Sexy Sadie" but perhaps one of our many Beatlkes conniseurs can shed some light on why the broke up with Maharisi Zen Yogi.

Trust me I am sure I remember it all wrong, but wasn't there some Mia Farrow issue and I thought that might have been cited as the Beatles reason for getting away from the Maharishi? Rape allegations?

WHEN the Beatles tagged on to the Maharishi with the insane giggle and the message of peace, the honeymoon did not last long.
"We made a mistake," said Paul McCartney after leaving the cult's settlement at Rishikesh on the banks of India's Ganges.
And the late John Lennon told how they quit after he confronted the guru about sex allegations.
He said: "There was a hullabaloo about him trying to rape Mia Farrow and a few other women, and things like that."
"The whole gang charged down to his hut. I was the spokesman, as usual, and said: 'We're leaving!'
"He asked why and I said: 'Well, if you're so cosmic, you'll know why.'
"He and his right-hand men were always intimating that he did miracles.

In his book, Lennon Remembers, the ex-Beatle revealed that he originally wrote his song Sexy Sadie about the Maharishi.
But he added: "I copped out and I wouldn't write "Maharishi, what have you done? You've made a fool of everyone."
