Another snowday here in NE KS!
About 5" on the ground, with more snow coming down as I type.
So far, we have had 3 snow days this year.
If global warming means more weather like this, then I'm all for it! :p

I was up a while before 5:00 am to make my loving wife a nice breakfast before she headed into work today.
After it was ready I went out and shoveled the driveway started her car and swept the inch of so of snow off the car. She sat here and leisurely finished her hot coco and finally left, after all I had said there was only a inch or so of snow out there.
She was gone maybe 16 minutes and came back home.
You could not tell that I had shoveled any snow out in the drive at all.
I just looked at 8:30 now and I would say we have six inches it the dirveway now. Probably much closer to 8 in the back yard where I did not shovel anything yet.
There is a bunch of patio stone out there I like to shovel for the dogs to sit on on the nicer days.

Just relax, stay home and enjoy it. The rat-race will still be there when the snow melts.

You're so LUCKY to have Snow Days!!! Here in California, the best we can hope for is RAIN days! There was a fun movie out awhile back called SNOW DAY. About what kids do when they have a Snow Day. So sure enjoy and SAVOR that Snow Day! Can't say I miss the SNOW one bit, but do miss the SNOW DAYS!!

You guys are in that part of the country where the jet stream is allowing for enough cold air to come in and make snow. Your weather will probably moderate a bit over the next few days as the jet stream repositions itself somewhat.
Over here the jet stream has moved well to our north for the past few days bringing us incredibly mild and humid wx for this time of year. We may get some heavy rain and thunderstorm days before we slowly revert back to somewhat cooler, but still unseasonably warm, wx over the next 2 or 3 days.

5 inches and you crawl to a halt eh?
Had to go to my parents this weekend. They got about 12 inches over the weekend. I hit the snow line at 1500', had to chain at 2800' (they are at 3500')
No hesitation :)
Though I know if it ever got down to the valley floor we'd all panic, I'd just chain up and go to work. Guess I'm just used to it-but thats part of growing up in a family with a utility worker-when most people say forget it, the bosses there are saying "we need you NOW" and weather be danged :) People don't like the lights being out. Its UNACCEPTABLE, especially when they are all at home because they couldn't get to work. Either 4WD or chains were the norm for us where we lived.
I wouldn't go if I didn't have to either, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do :)
Enjoy the day :)

Hey, works for me!
I honestly woke up this morning, and went through the regular routine, because I also thought we would have school. But they called it off.
Not complaining here! :D

You'd think being here in MN we would have snowdays. It got to -40 degrees Fahrenheit and all they did was delay school 2 hours :(

Pretty much normal weather here in the Dallas, Texas, area for mid Feburary. High 70s this afternoon and the sun was shining. We are supposed to get rain tomorrow or Tuesday.
Actually, the weather has been what my wife calls "California" weather (she was born in Glendale, California). That is pretty cool overnight but warms up in a hurry during the day.

I wish it was warm in MN. I was born in IL and it's still cold there but I have always liked warm weather better

I know what thats about. I work for a phone company. People lose dial tone and they freak out. Sort of makes you wonder what we did before telephone's. Bosses try to pull that "at least you got 4 wheel drive" But it dont help too much when all 4 wheels are sitting on 2 inchs of ice.
WV has been spared these past 5-6 years. Not much snow falls at all. I remember when we used to get it dumped on us. Now we get 3-4" and we dont know what to do.

We still have a land-line here.
Almost never lose that soothing dial-tone with it, even when power goes out.
That's one reason to keep that old land-line!

Snowdays were great when I was a kid, but now I drive a snowplow. Lotsa hours behind the wheel lately here.
Just relax, stay home and enjoy it. The rat-race will still be there when the snow melts.
The only problem with being a member of the rat race is that even after you find the piece of cheese at the end you're still a rat.
I just got off the blower with my dad in Stowe, VT: they just got dumped with a foot of new snow in the last 24 hours and it was white-out conditions most of the day. To top it off, the wind chill factor for tonight and tomorrow morning is -20 to -30°F.
We made it into Newsweek magazine in the latest issue: we have so much snow here there's no room to put it after it's thrown to the roadside by snowplows. Besides the roads being treacherous to drive on, intersections are the real hazard: the snow is piled four-to-five feet high on the corners so you can't see around them to spot cross-traffic. So, by the time you creep forward enough to see down the street, *WHAM!*

I have never seen a snow day in my entire life, but then I have seen over 5 feet of snow over a week end., as for ice, well that just slows me down a bit.

A long time ago I was on active duty with the U.S. Coast Guard stationed on Attu island(last island in aleutian islands). During the winter months we used to run either the snow plow or the snow blower 24 hours to keep the runway open so we could get logistics. We were also maintaining a remote site(about ten miles distant) for the Air Force. The equipment malfunctioned during the dead of winter. When we got to the location, in the snow track we had to dig down through about 10 feet of snow to get to the door on the second level of the building.
Do I miss the snow! Nah no way.

I'm out in the back yard sat in sun lounger glass of lemonade in hand and sun block head to foot, quite mild here in the UK and last few days has been wall to wall blue sky blazing sunshine. Unusual british weather, but now i've said that the heavens will probably open up and dump a load of crap on me.

I don't suppose that other islands name was Shemya but then again how many other islands up there have an air base on them. A good reason for leaving the the Air Force in the 60's was the real possibility that I might end up in Shemya someday. I managed to handle the heat of the Northwest frontier of Pakistan but the cold of the aleutian chain, no way.

I liked the sign someone held up yesterday during the NFL's PRO BOWL in Hawaii! It said "WIND CHILL, PLUS 84 degrees!" Thats about how it was here in San Diego to yesterday and today. Have to run the Air Conditioner already in the car. Words folks from here and KH6 just can't comprehend:
SNOW, ICE (except in drinks), Black ice( Don't want THAT in our drinks!!) , WHITEOUT (except for correcting paper mistakes), BLIZZARD (they have them at Dairy Queen now), SNOW BLOWER, Shoveling snow, climbing out the roof windows, SNOW DAYs, Ski's (except at the mountaintop resorts), Snowmobile, Sleds, Snow Shoes (look like Tennis rackets!!) , Snow Plow, COATS (Californians only wear "Jackets") Ear Muffs, SNOW SUITS, SNOW TIRES! So many East Coast and Midwest things Californians can't even FATHOM!!

You are right the other island was Shemya, and I stopped overnight there once on my travels in Alaska. Since attu was much larger than Shemya and we had a lot of building left over from the 2nd WW. One of the buildings was refurbished and in the summer a number of the AF personnel would come over to Attu do some fishing or hunting. The cold of the islands I was on in Alaska didn't compare to the cold in New York City, or the eastern shore of lake michigan. The cold of those two places was much worse. It was a damp cold,
whereas the cold in Alaska was dry.
I spent a year on Attu from November of 74 to November of 75. I actually got tired of fresh salmon too, we could just go down to a stream and pluck em out.

I've never understood why California requires snow chains on the highways in the Sierras, other than possibly that they force you to slow down. Chains and studded snow tires aren't even legal back here. You have to use plain old fashioned all-season radials or a good grade of snow tires. I know in the past, I've been allowed through with Minnesota or Iowa plates on my car, because they assume I know what I'm doing on snow (little did they know I'm a transplanted Californian).
