Researchers have found a correlation between drinking diet soda and metabolic syndrome — the collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that include abdominal obesity, high cholesterol and blood glucose levels — and elevated blood pressure.

The scientists gathered dietary information on more than 9,500 men and women ages 45 to 64 and tracked their health for nine years.

...surprisingly, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome was 34 percent higher among those who drank one can of diet soda a day compared with those who drank none.

I know that I and many of my friends get headaches from diet sodas...

Rats! Here I thought that I was being good by drinking diet soda instead of the "leaded" stuff and now I find there's yet another way to put me six feet under.

Good thing I only eat food with high fructose corn syrup in it or I'd really be a goner. :D

How can you drink that crap? I know a woman who drinks at least 12 diet pepsi a day and had a neighbor (man) who drank almost a case of it a day. Every time I saw him he had a can in his hand. He looked like he had beri beri.
I drink one (max) can of caffeine free coke a day in the summer only and always pour it over a glass full of ice to cut the sweetness.
Beer and wine on the other hand.......

Actually, I'm pretty good about it: I drink a can of soda maybe once or twice per week and that's about it.

I heard one story—which is probably an urban myth—about one character who drank many cans of Mountain Dew daily for y-e-a-r-s. When he died, an autopsy revealed an unusual green color in some of the digestion-related organs.

I don't drink any of the diet/light/free stuff. I drink normal coke and use oil, salt and butter to cook.

Amazing that north america is the biggest consumer of "diet" stuff on the planet and has the highest rate of obesity... cause and effect or effect of the cause?

Haha, I frequent the Chinese Buffets.

It seems to be a trend, where you see a big ( obese) person loading up, but drinking diet soda.

Like the soda will vouch for the grub in the stomach, "Hey, all this food is with me, it's OK'. :D

They haven't made an artificial sweetener yet that I could stand to use on a regular basis. Even that Splenda junk - "Tastes like sugar because it's made from sugar" - still tastes like chemical waste. It's absolutely horrible in hot tea. I haven't found a single artificially-sweetened diet soda that I would want to drink on a regular basis, either.

It's like my ex-mother-in-law: she'd spend hours at the gym, then would go hit a Baskin-Robins for a two-scoop sundae.

One of the troubles is, you don't get sugar anymore, you get high fructose corn syrup, and norhing's tasted as good since.

But if they brought back cyclamates, we could enjoy Happy Fizzies Parties again! :)

And let's not forget the people who drink Rum 'n Diet Coke or Jack and Diet.

Give me a break! :p

I couldn't care less. I hate soda, period. FIZZIES on the other hand were great! I'd chew a whole mouthful and let the foam dribble down my chin, great for scaring the girls. RRRRROOOOWWWW!!!!!!!

If you take the time to read the article, the researchers don't know if it is a result of what is contained in the diet soda, or the habits of those drinking it.

Crap!

If that is right, I only have a few more DAYS left!

I chug diet soda by the gallons during the big contests!
It's what keeps me running!

Otherwise I end up calling "QC"

The article brings up some interesting points but there is no clear evidence of what happened. Is it the lifestyle of the person or is it something in the soda? Sorta like global warming, is it the lifestyle of the people on the planet or is something the earth does.

One of the troubles is, you don't get sugar anymore, you get high fructose corn syrup, and norhing's tasted as good since.

Around passover, look for the coke with the yellow caps and hebrew writing on them.

That's the Kosher for Passover coke, which has cane sugar instead of HFCS.

I generally buy about 10 bottles of it to last me a couple of months.

Here we've stopped buying soda completely. We buy grape juice, grapefruit juice and water.

I wonder if this takes into account the typical person that drinks alot of diet soda orders like a triple fat cheese matso greaseball burger, a tub of extra greasy fries, and a vat of diet coke?

I quit drinking soda and improved my diet about 10 years ago. My weight prior to that was 240lb. Along with quitting I threw in a little physical activity. Several months later I was down to 180lb, dropped from a 38 waist to a 32 and have maintained that ever since.

I'll have to look for it.

Besides water, it's always nice to be able to have a cold soda after a workout or any other physical activity.

During the summer, when I come home from some climbing, a nice diet coke really hits the spot. (Water too, of course)

My wife's doctor told her years ago to be wary of aspartame (Nutri-Sweet.) He said that it was rushed onto the market without the customary long term tests because saccharin and cyclamates had fallen into disfavor as health risks, and the food and drink industry was clamoring for a replacement.
When I was in the aviation business I remember reading in an industry magazine a warning that aspartame caused night vision problems and pilots flying at night should avoid it.

The whole diet soda controversy is a lot of baloney.

I've been drinking diet cola for over 20 years with no ill effects whatsoever.

Next thing you know they'll be claiming that unprotected sex with Haitian hookers may be harmful to your health.

Jeez !

Just curious. Is there any soda in diet soda, and what is actually meant by soda ? Many years ago housewives used to put soda in the water when washing clothes. Perhaps its just a generic term such as a hoover for a vacuum cleaner.?
Anything consumed in vast quantities is bad for the internal parts of the human body, even water.

Probably "carbonated beverage" soda.

:) You say "biscuit," we say "cookie" [and a "biscuit" is a different, bread-like thing]. You say "lorry," we say "truck." You say "lift," we say "elevator."

Soda, soda-pop, pop, cola, soft drink, carbonated beverage... I'm not sure what "soda" is over there, but over here, if it has "soda" in the name but it isn't a beverage, it's probably "baking soda." The stuff has many uses - in cooking, as a whitener, as a deodorizer, and as a heartburn remedy. wow, does it go to work on that acid!]

Soda [carbonated soft drink] + baking soda = Run for your life. :D Makes a hell of a mess with vinegar, too, as I discovered in my childhood...

Well, that's not true about BEER.
There is no such thing as too much beer.
The whole too much beer controversy is a lot of baloney.

My dog Ralf has been drinking beer for over 20 years with no ill effects whatsoever.
