View Full Version : My Morning Commute is Ruined - Imus Did It

For years I've been listening to talk radio, WABC in New York. No matter who the host, there was always the ordinary street people, commuters etc. who would call in with their own opinions about the subject at hand whether political or otherwise. Curtis and Kuby were uncerimoniously removed and that idiot Imus and his ilk were installed and are on every morning and I just can't listen to them or him. I tried, but just can't he just bores me to death and it certainly is NOT the talk radio I know. No call in's, just political and sports talk for the most part, no humor and no pro's and con's. The closest I can come to trying to describe his show is a Howard Stern wannabee type format. I'm sick of it. I've actually tried to listen to broadcast FM, but that is for F'n Moron types and NPR is even worse than this AM idiot. So, I turn on the rig in the Jeep and listen to HF DX on the morning drive or just listen to road noise.

Imus needs to go back to his ranch and WABC needs to bring back "TALK RADIO", not Imus radio.

I wish Imus would start drinking and doing drugs again. The he'd be the great entertainer he was in the mid 70's. Now he's just boring.

Does your radio have an "Off" switch and/or a tuning knob?

Get Sirius. Howard 100 and 101.
Howard Stern IS the KING OF ALL MEDIA.
He is the man!

We had this discussion when Imus returned.

Here's the irony - Curtis fought for Imus to be allowed to be able to return to the airwaves - and look who's show was cut!

I listened to him as well on the same station (they reach CT rather well).

No more!

Howard is a king in his own mind including the fact he's an ass. A rich ass, but still an ass. You must be younger than 30. If over 30, you need to grow a little.

A radio station in Mtl started with Howard Stern, their rating went so low they had to stop broadcasting that A-hole.

I mean, what is wrong with this guy, he really thinks he's funny? Give me some music man, not that boring 5h17.

Perhaps it's a good thing. Consider it salvation from dear God herself /himself.
Do yourself a favour. Turn off the radio and whence you return home pick up a good book or two and aquire knowledge.

Howard is funny for the first week.

After that, he's about as humorous as a cat being waterboarded on a cheese grater.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the guy, but didn't Imus start way before Stern?

If thats the case, then perhaps its the other way around :) Perhaps Stern copied him.

But it really doesn't matter. I think they both suck :)

This looks like a good time to cut the AM umbilical cord Bill. You can read a good newspaper, listen to the other side for a week or so, or even watch Luchadores, all of which will be more intelligent than most of whats on the AM BCB these days.

Although I used to like Curtis and Kuby a lot, it got to be the same old thing after awhile. That and Curtis' little soap opera with the Wiseguys.

Heck this could be a real learning experience for NYC AM'ers. :)

Quote from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHOM-FM
resulted in a decline in ratings which the station tried to stop by acquiring rights to the syndicated show of shock jock Howard Stern. Stern made his debut on CHOM-FM on September 2, 1997 amid much controversy as he launched himself on his very first show heard in Montreal in an anti-Francophone/anti-French tirade. His show was dumped a year later, on August 27, 1998, after numerous complaints to the CRTC about politically incorrect remarks interpreted by complainants as "sexist" and "homophobic", despite the fact that the show ran on a delay with more controversial comments being censored, which sometimes resulted in minutes of dead air. While the CRTC did not take any actions against CHOM-FM, it is generally believed that owner CHUM Limited feared other projects could be hampered by them having such a controversial host on one of their stations.

I mean, everybody I knew who used to listen to CHOM said this guy was a complete 455h0|3 and they did not understand how come their beloved radio station could hit such a low.

Howard Stern is a loser.

Thank God I have XM and not Sirius to subsidize Stern and his nonsense.

I listen to music in the morning, and my commute is much more relaxed. The driving portion anyway, which is all of 15 minutes.

The rest is spent on the bus, where I take a nap or watch TV on my treo.

Imus, Stearn.....

GEEEZ guys, I'd rather listen to 14.275...At least I could detune the signal and make them sound funny....

IF you have more than two brain cells that can communicate, Stearn becomes boring in about 5 minutes.
IF you have the moral fiber of a flasher, you can listen to him about one or two minutes longer, and if your humor is rooted in mockery and insults at the 12 year old adolescent level, hell, you might make it through the show.

I never have, but I was interested in the 'Howard' phenomena for a while.

Never figured it out, other than to assume he had an appeal to people I would rather not be in contact with.

I can't stand that old fart. He's dumber than a rock. I can't believe they pay him and Howard what they do.

Makes me worry about where our society is going...but then again so many think WWF is real...Sad

Glenn Beck or any of those guys like Glenn are better to listen to than some old dried up long haired wannabe hippy with a extremely pompous attitude.

Pitiful is the perfect word to describe him and Howard too.

I don't think you have to be young to listen to Howard, though I don't anymore since he went to satellite. I'll grant you that it's an acquired taste, or in some cases a lack of taste, but for the most part it's just plain funny. At least if you have an open mind and a sense of humor that lacks some of the more prudish restrictions that have somehow become popular again in the last 10 years or so.
Imus is OK but it's kind of the same bit over and over, though I do think he deserves some credit for changing talk radio. Howard, whether you like him or not, deserves much more credit.

The problem I have with Stern is that he acts like he invented free-form comedy radio when people like Imus and Steve Dahl were around long before him. Really the main guy that changed the face of free-form comedy radio, and that people have seemed to forget, is Steve Dahl. He really took it to the next level long before Stern or Imus. I guess since he was only national for a short period of time people have forgotten about him. I remember a time though when if you even mentioned Steve Dahl people would cringe, kind of like if you mention Stern these days, though Stern has dropped off the radar a lot since he moved to satellite. All things change, what can ya do I guess. (It used to be fun while traveling to get on good old channel 19 and ask "does anyone know what station Howard Stern is on around here", and then listen for 50 people all keying up at once and complaining/whining about him. Funny stuff.)

Seems to me that you are better off listening to your amateur radio in the car, most talk radio these days sucks. If you are really hung up on talk radio then get satellite radio or an MP3 player and download any of the ten billion talk shows available online, including Steve Dahl [dahl.com](can't help myself.)

(Sorry, had to chime in on this one since I am a talk radio nerd and have been for almost as long as I could talk.)

Yeah I ordered up an interesting book, would use web if it was an option, by Dr. Ray Jackendoff on his theories on Cognitive Linguistics. Looks like I could use some of his ideas for search engine technology. I heard an interview with him on NeoCon radio, believe it or not, and later located a lecture of his at Google headquarters. Very interesting stuff indeed but very bleeding edge as his ideas are still evolving at this point.

So Medium Wave isn't all bad but you do have to be a skeptical listener :)

and horse's patooties, AFAIAC. I am blessed on my long commute to have a choice of HF dx, SW broadcast, classical music, NPR and Sirius CBC/BBC/NPR. I used to love AM radio, but it's almost all so scummy now...too bad.

Best one to me is Phil Hendry.
Very talented voice, would do a "show" where he had a guest that had some bizarre, horrid views, people would "call" and razz the guest in shock.

There were no guests or callers all the voices were Phil's.

Imus goes back at least the mid-70's when he was really funny on WNBC. He had great bits, including the Right Rev. Billy Sol Hargis. He did really funny stuff.
I don't know when Howard started, but I listened to him when he had the afternoon/evening drive on the same station. What was good then was it wasn't all Howard, come to think of it it wasn't all Imus, either. They both played music and the funny bits came between the songs.

Don't know when Imus stopped the music, but Howard stopped when he got the morning drive time slot on K-Rock. Then I never listened to him again. But, I guess people love his ca-ca poo poo brand of humor.

If you get satellite at all, you can avoid Howard, even by chance, by getting XM. That was a very determining factor for me.
