The Statue of Liberty, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial are all national icons - potent symbols of American ideals and democracy.
And yet these national treasures are often left woefully unprotected - by absent guards, sleeping officers, and a disinterested, under-trained police force, according to a stinging report published today by the Interior Department’s Inspector General.
Interior IG Earl Devaney and his staff recently interviewed more than 100 U.S. Park Police staffers, and secretly monitored Park Police security operations at national monuments in New York and Washington. They found “deficient security” at the monuments and “an inability to effectively conduct police operations.”
New York:
Ninety-five percent of Park Police officers interviewed in New York say that staffing at the Statue of Liberty is insufficient. “The truth is that we are not covering the posts…it’s all smoke and mirrors,” one manager confided.

You seem to think that this is an important mission. Why don't you volunteer your time to guard the statue of liberty? If every one of you diligent linkers went to work guarding one of our nation's treasures, I for one, would sleep better at night.
You can probably get them to let you carry a ham radio walkie talkie with you so you can keep in touch with other members of the team!

Uh, cite where I claimed it was your quote? It was OBVIOUS that it was from the article. Quoting a post does NOT imply that the respondent assumes that the quoted words are the poster's words, only that they are not the respondent's words.
BTW this is important.
It's CLEAR that YOU think so. That's why I suggested that you volunteer to guard miss liberty! I bet they'll let you have REAL handcuffs!
PS: As a bonus you won't have to spend your day thinking about tricksy english skills!

What is so special about the washington monument?
I understand war memorials and the like needing protecting but a monument that commemorates George Washington? doesnt make sence to me.
It failed to mentioned the Martha Washington monument, just a short distance away from the Washington Monument. (If you haven't seen it, imagine taking the (George) Washington Monument, inverting it, sticking it all the way into the earth, then removing it so you have a form-fitting hole.)
Yeah, I know--it takes a sick mind. ;>
As an aside—and this is true—the last time I visited D.C. a couple of the monuments were under renovation and cleaning; they had large signs that said "Monumental cleaning in progress." (Well, I thought it was funny.)

Yep it's sure way more important to put down someone pointing out gross problems in the US than it is to accept facts that are square in our face.
The FM has completely neglected anything other than the guns daddy bought him, but, of course, that's OK 'cuz he's their man, despite all the evidence that we've had a completely incompetent FM in the White House going on eight years.
Here's hoping that the trance the knee-jerk-o-cans laid on the US for the last 27 years is wearing off and we can once again have good, talented leaders instead of FM's in the White House.

This is the start to a plot to a major action movie starring Will Smith, Bruce Willis or Nicholas Cage! Terrorists decide to blow up the Statue of Liberty and our star is a Park police officer who takes them on, almost alone, to defeat a whole army of them equipped with automatic weapons and a nuclear bomb. It shows how the other guards are sleeping and how the city has underfunded the security allowing the terrorists to get in and set the bomb ready to blast! What a SHOW!!! Going to sell ALOT of popcorn. I know I am ready to watch it when it comes out on DVD!

Hand cuffs? Will they let him have a gun too?
The larger question looms:
Will they let 'im have bullets ?
