Ok. Nothing but random choices for 20 iterations. No input from me.

How?

Steve, you are bad.Really bad.

The answer will always be a multiple of 9. That is 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 81.

These numbers will all have the same symbol.

This is exactly right. But, seriously, given how high hams think their own intelligence is this should be a non-starter. It's junior high school "almost" algebra.

Let X be the number you guess.

Then X = 10a + b where a is the tens digit and b is the ones digit

You are asked to subtract the sum of the digits to come up with a new number Y.

So Y = X - (a + b)
= 10a + b - (a + b)
= 10 a +b -a -b
= 9a

The answer will always be nine times the first digit. If you couldn't figure that out without moving past the second page you ARE NOT smarter than a 7th grader! :)

Might be simple minded, but the imagery is pretty intense. Reminds me of the awesome imagery in Zork Nemesis, one of the most intensely beautiful video games I ever played.

That's part of the shtick! It's designed to distract and make the pattern of repeated symbols non-obvious. Every single one of these puzzles is making use of very elementary properties of decimal numbers and simple algebra. If you take a second to write down one or two simple equations it will be obvious why it works.

On the other hand, if you like to be mystified and mesmerized by pretty pictures, then don't bother with the math! :)

No math required here.

Just good observational skills.

True, but there are those would prefer to believe some kind of supernatural magic.

I went looking for something like this that went beyond the trivial but couldn't find any. Has anyone found anything more interesting than those posted?

Completely understandable.
