Regardless how you feel about who is running, you must admit Election 2008 is making history.

For the first time we have both a Woman and a Black American making a serious run for the office of President of the United States.

You don't have to like either one of them, or vote for either one of them for that matter. But the fact they have gotten this far demands respect.

Times are a changing.................

And no, Jessie Jacksons attempt a few years back did not count. No one in their right mind ever took that racist seriously...............

The 2008 presidential election is truly historic nor only because an African-American and a woman have come this far but because one of them will be the next POTUS!

Obama has a chance, but Hillary does stand a chance in Hades of winning the general election. Her negatives are too high, and she cannot carry the non-affiliated vote. McCain already has solid moderate Republican and non-affiliated voter support. Conservative Republicans may be making a fuss about John McCain now, but they will come out in droves if Hillary is the Democratic nominee.

Now, if Nader and Bloomberg both enter the race, things will get very interesting. Nader will peel off a sizable percentage of the liberal vote, and Bloomberg will peel off a sizable percentage of the moderate vote.

The ultimate Narcissist is already being bruited:

As to the penultimate Narcissist, I think he is too much a realist and will stay in New York. It would really be stretching it to imagine that a large number of voters would actually believe B'berg is really a conservative Republican. He would blow a bunch of bucks on a national humiliation, whereas he can sit in NY and play yenta.

There will always be a soft spot in my heart for the Green Party. Not because I think Ralph Nader has a clue about anything, and not really for any particular candidate that's ever run on the Green Party platform. But because it's been a very grass-roots organization all the way down to its toes. Yea, I know, that probably doesn't come across very strongly when you can't avoid seeing/hearring Nader, but it does when you get close to the party.

I was at the Green Party New York State convention in 2000, and saw a candidate who really, really impressed me. The convention was held at a farm in Bethel, NY (Catskills region) in August. The weather was terrible for an outdoor event because it rained buckets almost continously on Thurs, Fri, and Saturday. On Saturday morning there was a short break in the rain coming down and we were hanging out at the edge of the woods wondering when the next rain would start, and as I sat there I watched this guy, in a suit, slogging through the mud (it was ankle deep) going from group to group. When he got to where I was sitting, it turned out that he was the Green Party Candidate for the local assembly seat. Wow. An actual politicion out there, slogging through mud, to get up close to the electorate and speak one on one with as many of us as possible.

I very much doubt if any candidate from the major parties would ever do that.

OTOH, the Green Party's time is still a long, long way off (at least until the next administration screws up, yet again, and the electorate has fully woken up to the real problems in the country).

Just my usual, election year, tribute to a bunch of people whom I'm glad are alive.
