I was checking out the Southgate Amateur radio club site and spotted a banner ad that said "Amateur Radio Ringtones".
Now I'm not the worlds most imaginative guy and I really couldn't come up with anything beyond some CW dits and dahs or maybe some digital mode sounds.
Any thoughts on what a ham ringtone should sound like?

Hmm, you could always make your own MP3 ringtones with things like...
"CQ Cell, CQ Cell"
"Encoming DTMF transmission!"
"Groundwave propagation alert!"
"CONNECT Cell VIA Verizon"
"Is this frequency in use?"
"Up 5, moron!"
OK, so I'm not very imaginative either :)

How about a list of Roger Beeps......
or
How about a a bunch of Echo Mike Sounds.......
or
For those those that love Winlink the sound the sound of a Winlink Transmission for you've got Web Mail.....
That's just a couple of suggestions I'm sure others can come up with others.....
 ;) :D ;)

Friend of mine has 'CQ DX" (cw of course) as his ring tone. Easy, just generated it from his keyer and recorded it, saved it as a ring tone. I've been thinking of something like that myself. Maybe 'QRV' Or "QTC" or "QRK?"
Or maybe 'NOT CB'
But that would not work as it would be in CW and who would know?

How about an alternating "LID" at 800 Hz and then "FU" at 700 Hz. Just to make it real.

I used a program that allows you to type in a message and have it converted into an audio file that can be saved.
I then used the website of www.myxertones.com to upload the MP3 and have it sent to my phone. It comes as a text or picture message and you just save it. At that point you can make it your default ringtone or make specific ring tones for specific people.
The program I used to create the inital file was a program designed for learning Morse.

I used one of those sites to make a CW ringtone for my smartphone, and one of them says
CQ DX CQ DX DE KB5FSV UR PHN IS BLOWING UP KN
I set it to 30wpm with a 850 or 900 hz tone.

Jimmy - just curious, but why call a CQ (even CQ DX) and end the transmission with KN?
KN means "go ahead, specific station". If you're calling CQ, there is no "specific station".

Why would I call CQ DX and then follow it with a message like UR PHN IS BLOWING UP?
I don't know, thats just what I used when making the ringtone. It's just a ringtone, nothing says it has to be properly formatted for on the air.

"Is this frequency in use? de (name if in address book)"
Someone might have already said that, didn't read all of the ideas.

I used a program to codes my alerts sounds in windows as cw for the type of alert. Now I can be in another office and hear CQ CQ when I have an email coming in! Goofy I know but it keeps people at work amused. I think the word eccentric came up.:)

Use WinMorse to make CQ DE [TN, Name, etc.] or QNU for text messages.
One of the funniest ringtones I ever heard was in Adam Sandler's version of Heartbreak Kid. Every time his best friend's wife would call, it played the Witch Theme from Wizard of Oz.
And I used WinMorse to replace Windows and AOL sounds. It no longer annoys me with "You've got mail!" which sounds stupid in the first place. Now it emits, QNU, the traffic net Q signal for "traffic for your station."

I have a Verizon Motorola W315, and I can't download ringtones. They must be entered manually with key sequence.
To have "CQ" as a ringtone, I would have to use software that lets me type in text on my computer and convert that text to a midi sound file, then use software that converts that midi into text that I can then enter into my phone. I have to go to my phone's sounds then enter the tone composer and enter a bunch of letters and numbers that the phone converts into polyphonic sounds. Simple! :(

I heard of one ham who had a ring tone that was in code: ._. .. _. _ _. ._. .. _. _ _.
-gary
ps- Its hard to simulate code using this text editor as it forces only one space between characters. I can't use two spaces between each code letter, so a "g" comes out looking like "tn". -g

I put the following sequence into my tone composer and I have "CQ" as my ringtone
00 5 3 44 11 7 5 3
5 7 5 3 44 11 7 5
3 5 7 44 11 3 44 11
7 5 3 44 11 7 5 3
5 7 5 3 44 11 7 44
11 7 5
You have to enter that exactly...in other words, press zero twice, five once, and so on.
edit: I didn't say HOW. In your menu, choose "sounds" then scroll down until you see "new tone", select that, then enter the above keys.

I'd bet that ad comes from a site that doesn't have the slightest idea what the heck a "ham radio ringtone" is supposed to be - they just want to sell you ringtones. If you're on a site about, say, vegan homeopathic medicine, the ad would be for "vegan ringtones." :)
My old phone doesn't have the capability anyway. Not that I need it...

Since I'm doing all this googling, this site will help you make your own Morse code ringtones WITHOUT giving your number to one of those "free" ringtone sites. All they are doing is harvesting cell phone numbers.
