HI , am a recent tech licensee and as I prep for taking the General, I picked up a sick Kenwood TS-430s to fix. Its been about 25 years since I did any serious electronic tech work and wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. Previous owner reported no trans output and back of unit getting very hot., with recieve fine. Set up rig on 12v wet cell to test
receive and recieved well and entire back of unit got very hot .
Still continued to receive well and temporary power leads did not get warm.
Know this question is a bit premature, but as I try and wake up some under used diagnostic brain cells does anyone have any suggestions
Thanks Mark V / Kc9MSN
Ps. 12v Battery was fully charged and heat up of panel only took perhaps 5-6 minutes Very hot to touch

I heard a similiar coversation (TS-430 not working) on 40 meters this afternoon.

You actually have a very good tech (Miles) at AES Milwaukee on Good Hope Road.

However, if you want to go somewhere else ...
I would recommend a phone call to either Clif Holland, WA5IPF at Avvid (Texas)
http://www.avvid.com/

or Bill Leahy, K0ZL at B&B Technical Services (Colorado)

There is a known problem with the finals in these; it is well-described here;

http://www.g3ynh.info/commercial/TS430.html

I've done two of these repairs. Not too difficult, just not much spare room to work in.

I haven't encountered the "heatsink-getting-hot" symptom, though; perhaps a shorted transistor or heat-sink insulator.

OMG, I have not been back to AES in about a year or so.

Miles is, and always was, a great guy, and a great tech....But are you sure he is still THERE...I am 104 years old, and he was going to retire when I first MOVED to WI in 1927.....

Great, Miles has always been a gentleman, and has always been up front and honest.

Valid question. I have been dealing with AES Milwaukee since 1970s when I was a Technician and Klaus Radio in Peoria, IL was fading in late 1970s as an amatuer radio dealer. Terry, W9DIA was usually around - when he was not flying somewhere!

When I was in the store November and saw this posting:
Wanted: Electronic Technician to service Amateur Radio equipment. Should have license, 2 years technical school and service bench experience. Benefits. If you are interested, or know of anyone who might be interested, please contact our Store Manager in Milwaukee, between 9 and 5:30 Central Time.
My first question to staff was: "Miles finally retiring?" Which they smiled and said .. not likely :)

Nope, Miles Cundy still there -- but they are looking for more help!

Thanks guys, Really appreciate the input and links. I'll look over the links first and see if anything seems to make sense and if not AES is only about 30 min. from my home
Many thanks , 73 Mark V / KC9MSN
