Hi!

I'm wondering if there are compreable (sp?) computer programs, preferably the Linux kind, that could be used
to control my Icom 706MKII-G. Yes, I know about the
Ham Radio DeLuxe program, but it's a WIN program.

I haven't had much luck in getting the old Athlon 1.2 gig
revived. I have an OLD 500 mhz computer that has Linux on it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

What I'd REALLY like is a used laptop, but that will have to wait until Dub Ya' sends me my economy stimulus check. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

Respectfully,

Hamlib is a library that many programs use for rig control. So far, grig may be the general purpose radio control software you're seeking.

Why can't you just use the windblows prog with wine?

That's how I use my QSL card maker and about 4 other programs.

They don't all work.

I almost had MixW running under wine. Decided it'd take less time to setup a dual boot with WinXP for the Ham Radio programs that didn't have comparable Linux apps, than to dork around with wine for a week.

I'm running FLDigi/Ubuntu/Fluxbox to replace MixW/win now.

Wine is a work in progress and has been since I first played with it a decade ago. It does run many programs very well and today is pretty much a cinch to use over what it once was. But, it is continually chasing Windows taillights and also must reimplement Windows' bugs faithfully as well, which is not easy as some programs depend on them.

For what it is it does great, but perhaps a virtualization program like Virtualbox is a better option if you absolutely need to run a legacy Windows app.
