One of the last two surviving French veterans of World War I has died at the age of 110.
Louis de Cazenave, who fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, died in his sleep at his home in Brioude, central France, his son Louis said.

Mr de Cazenave's death leaves Lazare Ponticelli, also 110, as the last "poilu", or French WWI veteran.

I think there are still 2 known WW1 vets left in the US. One of the last 3 just died a few weeks ago.

Doesn't seem to me all that long ago when there were plenty of WW1 vets walking about, many not yet retirement age, and the majority of WW2 vets still looked young.

I can recall, in 1956 I believe, when the last known Civil War veteran died. That was 91 years after the end of the war. WW1 ended in 1918, 90 years ago this coming November. So the last of the vets are fading away right on schedule.
