Hi Guys-
Machine is a dual boot Dell 3000. Under Linux, everything works just fine. But when I boot up in XP, neither IE 6 or FireFox wants to talk to the router, and I get "Page cannot be displayed" error. It just won't let me talk to the internet.
I CAN access the router by typing the IP address in the URL box, and can ping it. Also, IPconfig works OK. Everything worked OK a week or so ago when I last booted Win$. Since other WIN machines work ok for net access, I assume it's not a hardware problem or a router problem. Did switch cables and try another port on the Router, but that didn't help.
[EDIT]. Deleted cookies, saved files, and generally all that crap and that didn't help.
Anybody got any ideas?

Sounds like you have a firewall with HTTP protocol suppressed. Check to see if you can ping your router.

DNS servers properly entered in Network settings?
IP's will route without DNS, but not names like www.blah.com.

NIG - how do I check that under XP? Or would it be in the firewall/router?

If you can ping the router but not get out, then probably the default gateway (DNS server address) is not set up correctly.
Go into control panel, network connections, right click on your LAN connection, select properties, and scroll down to TCP/IP.
Highlight that line and click properties, and it should have
(for most users) "obtain an IP address automatically", as well as "obtain DNS server address automatically".
If you set up your router to use manual addresses rather than DHCP, you may need to put an address manually in the first box, but only if you remember changing it in your router. By default DHCP is on.
In the second box you can try putting in the router's address for the gateway (DNS server address), such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Then try turning the connection on & off a few times (or using repair) and see if that helps.

AVL-
Thanks Frank - what you said worked. Somehowthere was a wierd IP in the Lan Settings (should have written it down to check it out, but didn't. Did I get Hijacked somehow?
I ONLY allow Win$ to go to a couple of somewqhat trusted sites - Weather Service and the Court system. Everything else is done under Linux, whcih doesn't know or have r/w permission for the XP hard drive (separate drives).
Anyway, alles ist gut now! Again, tnx. I'm a Win$ "noob" and find it very confusing and counter intuitive.
