Does anyone know how to get Outlook (97) to "play nice" with Netscape 7.x mail?

Nwtscape mail has no problems, but If I install Office 97 and set up Outlook, it works fine the first time, but once I use Netscape mail and try to start Outlook, Outlook crashes saying a dll is missing, and then has the message that a device required is already in use. (And the computer's not on-line at the time.)

Outlook Express doesn't have the same problem; it works just fine with Netscape Mail.

I use the free email program Thunderbird, it's a lot like outlook express, and works fine on Windows & Linux.
On Linux there's also Kmail and others as an option, such as Evolution.

Thanks for the reply; I'll probably change to Thunderbird eventually. But for now, I NEED to use the Netscape (about 1.3 GB of e-mail in various folders) and would like to use Outlook for it's OTHER features. I found a way to not need outlook OR Outlook Express for the e-mail needs, but I'd still like the other features of Outlook.

The actual messages are:
"THE OUTLLIB.DLL file is linked to missing export MAPI32.DLL:36"

And then
"D:\Progtram Files...\outlook.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning."

Outlook works fine when first installed, but after using Netscape, it bombs out.

I think you will find netscape thinks its the exclusive mail item and therefore it captures the .dll for mail. Tell it its not the primary mail getter.

Thanks, Curt. That seems to do the trick, after also rebooting. (Changing Netscape mail eliminated the first error message, but the "device not functioning" message still came up without a reboot.)

I'm a bit over my head here. Is there some way to create a "dummy" .dll file for Outlook to keep it happy? The other error message is very helpful; it would be nice if there was a clue as to WHAT device is not functioning. (Typical Microshaft error message.)

Sorry I cannot help you on Outlook as I have never used it myself. I used to use Netscape and it would not allow me access to my WP address book. I discovered that not specifically calling anything primary it allowed both to coexist.

OK, Thanks again. I'll see how that works out. Seems to me that Outlook will eventually TRY to make itself the default mail, even if it doesn't succeed. But Outlook has some interesting and useful features, including syncing with a Palm PDA. But because of security concerns, I've always used Netscape for mail, and I'd rather not change right now. (I have a new XP Pro box in the works.) I'm sure MS will present me with even more "fun and games" about program compatibility (or lack thereof) when I get that machine running.

Just be sure to stick with XP http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif - It may take you a little while to get everything the way you like it, but once it's set, it pretty much stays that way. (Unlike so other OS's we could mention. Ahem...vista)

Curt apparently had the solution to "un-designate" Netscape as the "default" mail client. So far, NS works as well as before, and Outlook doesn't insist on making itself the default.
While XP might be nice, it still has some compatibility issues with software/hardware I use; I have the extra license(s) for Windoze '98 and it has always worked "good enough" [sic] especially for a dedicated shack computer. I still use and need the "old" K6-2/450 machine for use with a very expensive 35mm slide scanner (no drivers for XP) as well as some other ISA bus peripherals; also to use the dual RS-232c ports for a PDA and rig control without "conflicts" common to USB-> RS-232 adapters.
Since it's a dedicated machine, it won't routinely be "Internet savvy," so security, spyware, and anti-virus considerations are not the top-most considerations. (Downloads or non-commercial software will be checked on a different computer before installation.)

There are some programs that still are useful, but won't work even in an XP->DOS emulation mode. Hence, the machine is also dual-boot with MS-DOS 6.22. (Just wish the Ramdisk program in DOS would allow larger capability with 256 MB memory. Anything over 16 MB Ramdrive fails. Then again, in DOS, that's close enuf to the capacity of an original XT hard drive, anyway!)
Thanks to all that replied.
