It was widely known that the levees would fail. Why would someone live in a flood plane?

You live in Winter Park, FL. Why would someone live in an area with a history of sinkholes?

Actually I live in Nashville now.
But even if I chose to live in Orlando/WnPk again, the risk of having my dwelling DESTROYED by a sinkhole is pretty minimal. Even by a hurricane (due to its distance from the coast).
However, living in a flood plane will almost guaranteed that your dwelling is destroyed when a flood comes about.
The risk is not "if" but "when" regarding New Orleans. That's an entirely different scenario.

Because that is where they call home. It's where their homes are, where their families are, where their businesses are, where their schools and churches are, where their jobs and livlihoods and memories are, etc. That's why they live there.
Instead of trying to fault people for living in the place that they call home why not ask why were the levee's not properly maintained. Why were the people given deplorable conditions and a pathetic response from the Bush administration.

Your explanation is valid for those who currently live in such places, but doesn't really hold merit for those who decide to move into a flood plane, build a new house on a river bank, move their family to the base of volcano, etc.
I live with a county planner and I hear amazing stories of folks who buy unlivable land, expect variances, and demand the public infrastructure ensure their "acre of heaven" stays that way. I have little respect for a new land owner who knows the risks of his/her purchase, but is in the front of the line with hands extended, tears in their eyes, and demanding some public agency be held accountable for their misfortune.
...dang, looks like i woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

I remember one of those Winter Park sinkholes back when I lived on the eastern end of Orlando (78/80) Was real dry for a number years water departs, sinkhole appears...

Hey you know....pain and suffering vary by people. Especially when they are suing, well, the government, basically.
I doubt many of these people filed claims without lawyer guidance. That means that there is a supposedly "educated" person in the loop of most of these filings too.

Regardless of who is to blame or the degree of pain and suffering, it does no good to bankrupt the country and the government. Doing so could potentially mean no ability at all to help in a future disaster.

Using 3 quadrillion as the suit and 300 million as the approximate population of the US, that means every man, woman, and child would have to kick in 10 million dollars each to pay these lawsuits if they were actually awarded.

Absolute corruption with government, state, federal, local.
However, it was known for DECADES that the levee system could NOT withstand a major hurricane. Anyone who remained there despite that and wondered why their house was destroyed is a fool.

Sinkholes can happen in Louisiana as well, Fred. The entire city of New Orleans is sinking due to pumping of groundwater, and the city being built on a natural sponge.
But I do think someone who insists on living in a location BELOW sea level, and then demanding the government bail their sorry arse out when their house gets flooded is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
I pay outrageous homeowners insurance bills because of thinking like that. Even though I have the good sense God gave me to live on a hill instead of in a swamp, and thirty five miles from the coast. But I guess someone has to make sure the idiots with second homes on a sandbar have affordable insurance.
As for New Orleans and it's 'chocolate city' mayor the imbecile electorate put back into office, I have no sympathy. NOLA got flooded, which was predicted years ago, yet the local levee boards pocketed the money and didn't maintain what they were responsible for. The Mississippi coast was literally wiped off the map, but you don't hear about the folks from Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Gulfport, and Biloxi making outrageous claims for non-existent damages. Not that anyone would listen anyway, considering the belief that New Orleans was the only area affected by the big hurricane, and everyone else was merely inconvenienced.
Enough of the pity party for New Orleans. Katrina shouldn't be an excuse for every citizen of Louisiana to get a huge government check, even if the worst thing that happened to them is losing a few trees out of the yard.

California is the BEST place to live when it isn't on fire! Now that it's the rainy season, no more fires until next fall!

Now it's time for mud slide season.
California. If you don't like where you are standing, wait a minute. Mother Nature might oblige you and move the earth beneath your feet.
As taxpayers, my children have a moral obligation to pay people in NOLA exactly ZERO.
