They have an issue at the moment with flash.
Drop by the Ubuntu forums and you will find a solution.

Go to this website,

Flash Player 9 for Linux (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P2_Platform=Linux)

Download the .tar.gz package and follow the install instructions for a .tar.gz install

The program 'mplayer' can be found in the following packages:

Multimedia in Linux is not as simple as in WinDoze, because oany of the required plugins are proprietary and can't be included in a free distro due to licensing issues.

Do a google for Ubuntu and Multimedia and you should turn up a bunch of HOWTO's that are Ubuntu specific. Also, as a previous post noted, Ubuntu forums is a good resource. Sorry, I can't find the specific pages I looked at a few months back.

Sourceforge, freshmeat, and tucows are good sources of a lot of open source software.

Here's a start:
Close all Firefox windows.
Go to Applications -> Add/Remove Applications.
Click the Preferences button.
If you want the Nvidia or ATI 3-D drivers, check Proprietary drivers.
If you want to use codecs or other software restricted by copyright or legal issues, check that.
Click the close button.
You'll get a box with a Reload button, click it.
In Add/Remove Programs, select Show: All available applications
In the Search box, enter the word ubuntu
Highlight "Ubuntu restricted extras" and read what it does
- (this should install the Flash plugin, but I can't remember if it also installs
- GStreamr ffmeg video plugin and GStreamer plug-ins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepak,
- check those after installing restricted extras)
Check its box and click the Apply Changes button.

This will get you started, but won't install all the proprietary codecs you'll come across on the Internet.
