Got the straight key out for the first time in ages...every time somebody answers my CQ and we start a QSO they fade into the muck. Am I just in a black hole?

I have one of those here.
In the middle of my back yard. My cel phone does not work, when I am mobile and talking simplex, A friend down the road knows when I pull into the back yard.
Funny thing is that I have the highest land around.
But everything on the tower works great...
