the arrl flag has a series of...call them horizontal stripes, of red and white. i'm probably overthinking this, but the white stripes appear to me as the letters e. i, and x, if i were to make them cw tones.

is someone messing with my mind, am i messing with my own mind, or what?

Starting from the top, with red being "tone on", the stripes spell out "QST".

Many moons ago, when some buffalo still roamed the prairie, the ARRL had a flag design competition; this was the winner.

Didn't like it then, and it hasn't grown on me.

This past year a Debian developer had an official tartan registered. Among the features is the width of the stripes from left to right spell out DEBIAN in Morse. I think it's neat as many hams have had a hand in the distribution over the years.

I just took a look at the ARRL flag and darned if it isn't QST from top to bottom. I never paid attention to that before. That's one more bit of ham trivia I know! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Proof that I never read the ARRL product catalog:Quote[/b] ]ARRL Flag
-- The official flag of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). Size 4' x 5'8"

The current ARRL flag was adopted in 1980 based on a design by Ralph Holberg, N4RX. There are 15 horizontal stripes, red and white, and one vertical red stripe at the hoist, all suggesting the stripes of the US and Canadian flags. The horizontal red stripes spell “QST” in Morse code, a “dah” stripe being three times as wide as a “dit” stripe.

In addition to spelling out "QST" in Morse, the fifteen red and white horizontal stripes also represent the 15 regional divisions of the ARRL.

So when is the "QST" on the flag going to have some jagged lines across it to represent the WinLink QRM?

Maybe they should put a sailboat somewhere on the logo as well.

snort. so thaaaaat's what is is! i was thinking/looking outside the box, as usual. maybe i'm dyslexic, copying cw by the silence between the tones. this could explain why i don't have/make many contacts.

OK, now for the competition:

Who votes for AG4YO's design, and who likes N5RLR's?

(IMHO, they should combine the two...)

HAppy New Year, one and all.

Nah. The mast should look like a middle finger, considering the respect the WL2K virus has for general AR.

The same reason some States have an official flower, insect, rodent, predator, village idiot, whatever. Or why fishermen go to Alaska... for the "halibut." http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

They gotta have something to salute in those "closed door" meetings. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There are a lot of companies that have them. Most of them are plain white or one other solid color with just the logo on them. I guess the ARRL just got a bit more fancy than most get.

The local HD dealer flies a American Flag with a POW/MIA one underneath that. I don't know if HD has its own flag, but if they do, they don't fly it. I've seen a few other places around here with that combination also.

There is a trucking company somewhere around here that flies a Teamsters flag below the American and State flags also.

Guess it depends on if you have the money to pay for them. Some of those really large flags aren't cheap, and neither are the poles to be able to hold them....

The ones that annoy me though are the ones where they don't take them down at night, they aren't lit, and sometimes they get awfully worn before they finally replace them. Almost like they have a one-flag-per-year budget. If you're gonna fly it, make sure it looks good.

Sorry about that Chief, er, Ryan... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Would've put ARRL's logo on it, but I didn't want to be bothered over "copyright" issues.
