could be just a matter of time before APRS is targeted.
Marketers target cell phones
Customer’s location and actions could be used by advertisers
What if you were standing outside a whore house?
NEW YORK - Your cell phone is a potential gold mine for marketers: It can reveal where you are, whom you call and even what music you like.
Considering the phone is usually no more than a few feet away, these are powerful clues for figuring out just the right moment to deliver the right coupon for the store just around the corner.
But first marketers will have to wrest the personal profiles from mobile carriers worried that annoyed subscribers might defect to rivals.

Better than standing (or other) inside.

I think this is GREAT !! Just think of the possibilites. Marketers can determine what time of the day a person goes to the toilet and flash them an ad for a new and improved version of Charmin. This is wonderful. The very thought of adverttizers monitoring every aspect of peoples lives is truly a great advance into the future.
I don't have a cell phone and never will.

"Are consumers going to be spooked by the idea that suddenly their phone goes beep and it's a Starbucks offer, and they are standing next to a Starbucks?"
Uh, yeah! I won't tolerate it. I pay for the phone service, it's on my belt, it's my domain and advertising isn't welcome. Period.

One day, the mechanism might be in place to even marry location data with purchase history. Say, you've bought a movie ticket for a particular theater and show time, and the phone senses you're at the theater, Yahoo could infer you are waiting in line and perhaps deliver coupons for popcorn.
I better have an option of turning that crap off, along with sharing my data (Verizon provides that now) or I'll be joining the K2WH camp of cellphone-less.

I <s>think</s> hope my phone is probably just too old to be susceptible to such shenanigans. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif #<s>I know</s> I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any GPS capability.

But why is everyone so much against this ?Think about how wonderful this is. You walk past a Statbucks and "BEEP" a special offer comes up on your phone. Think of the great advantages and how we will all benefit once Jarvis Coffin of Burst Media has all our cell phone info. You travel into a new town on vacation and BEEP, you get ads for car rentals, hotels, motels, brothels, gambling establishments, all the wonderful things you might want. The wonderful possibilities are endless and they'll always know who and where you are. It's wonderful to give up privacy for all those wonderful, beautiful ads.

Amen, kf6rdn!
-this coming from a wife whose husband owns a cell phone and carries a work pager 24/7. #Never once called / paged to find out where he is or what he's doing, either - if I need to know (i.e. he's running late, had to run an errand after work, etc), he'll call me to let me know.
Edited to respond to the correct poster....

Not too likely.

In any event at least one cell phone carrier would choose NOT to provide the lists and most folks would change service to that company. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

See the advantages. They can monitor the whereabouts of the Grim Reaper and target coffin sale ads to those at his next stop. A big plus for coffin sellers and undertakers.
