View Full Version : Holiday Rendezvous

I am sitting here now with a water glass filled with a nice Pinot Noir awaiting the annual invasion of the in-laws.

Like the Rendezvous of old, these crows roost every year about this time to swap beads and baubles and chew the fat. My fat this year. In the form of a ham; roasted potatoes; marinated shrimps; al dente snap beans cold and dressed in sesame oil and garlic chilies; fresh French rolls and Ciabatta loaves, and myriad stuffed tomatoes and other bait.

Just finished spreading the newspapers under the dining tables (three) and I am contemplating another glass of the Pinot Noir.

I know just how just how Pope Leo I felt waiting in the river.

In-laws. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I have sisters-in-law that make California Condors look pretty. And small.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Billhelm, you will have to shoot half of France. Any full-bodied red should be served in a glass that is easily warmed by the hand; only a sauvage would chill a good Pinot Noir. Stemware is for the effete Kalifornia chardonnay-baked-brie-and-Triskits set.

To quote the late Marcel Marceau: NON!

A bit later I shall be lucky not to cut my lip on the tiny metal ring around the neck!

It is the stemmed wine glass that gives best control of the temperature to the imbiber. I would say a good P-no temp would start out at 62.
P-no is full bodied red NON.

Pinot Noir - good stuff, I prefer it or a good Cabernet Sauvignon but quite frankly I don't much care for Merlot.

Al - I hope that you drink the upscale stuff, you can tell the better wines by the foil wrapped twist off cap instead of the cheap stuff with a rotten stick in the top of the bottle. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

BTW - someone brought me a few bottles of wine from a vinyard near Cleveland. Honest. Two names stick out in my memory "Catawba" and "Walleye White". Ghastly concoctions.

that line makes you not all bad. I prefer the corks....as long as they aren't made from rubber.

Albert... growing up in Iowa and Wisconsin, I love meat and cheese of all kinds!

That reminds me. I mostly grew up around the outskirts of Davenport, Iowa -- home of a prosperous and smelly Oscar Mayer meat packing/processing plant in the western downtown area. Cows and pigs would go in one end, and out popped all your favorite lunch meats, etc., at the other end. It was really quite an operation! Nothing was ever wasted; every last part of those animals was made into some product. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

While in elementary school in the 70's, a fellow classmate's father used to work at the plant. He and his dad claimed they lived atop Pork-Chop Hill. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Not surprising that I would have to explain to you that in-laws are not MY family. They are my wife's family. I guess it's different in the hills of Kalifornier where every litter ends up mixing genes.

Of course, that's where we get all the intellectual Dumbokrats.

Paper cup.

It helps you to avoid cutting your lip on that rough aluminum ring better than the top of the bag, which becomes soggy.

I can see you never passed a jug of WIR amongst your peers all closely huddled around a fire made with well creosoted railroad ties in the winter. You can see the steam rising off the bag as it dries almost instantly. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
