Wow...I shoulda kept up.
In '99 I self-produced a CD on my Roland VS-880. In 2002, when I got this computer, I read it in and it was resident on my computer and I could burn copies (of my own stuff) at will.
Seems MS is protecting me from myself.
The CD reader on this ancient machine isn't working, & I've got an external CD drive that works well. I just tried copying MY OWN STUFF onto the internal hard drive, and XP refuses to let me do that. All I can copy is a shortcut, but without that original CD in the external drive, XP refuses to acknowledge it.
Bummer. The CD I've got is the only copy I've got, I've given away all the other copies I had of it. Now, my computer is refusing to let me copy MY OWN STUFF.
This copy BS has gone too far. Anyone know how to copy a CD (remember, I produced it...I'm not doing anything at all that's illegal..I wrote it, I played it, I mastered it) from an external CD drive onto the internal HD with an up-to-date XP?
I'm bummed....how am I going to copy this?
Thanks...

Why are you using proprietary closed source software like XP ? Why not get rid of XP and join the free generation.
Remove XP from your computer and replace it with a free OSS operating system, preferably some form of GNU Linux like Debian. Use free software instead of closed source software. Remove copies of proprietary software and replace them with free software alternatives.

Umm but you ARE breaking the law. You need to send written and signed proof that you have given yourself the right to copy that CD to the RIAA.
Edit: What format is the CD in, is this a Audio(RedBook) or a data cd?
Get rid of Microshaft. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

One of my CD drives went bad on this computer (XP is the operating system) about a week ago so I replaced it. With the new drive came the latest version of "Nero". That program allows me to do all sorts of things that XP is pretty "shakey" about.
You might want to see if you can locate the latest version of Nero.

Don't use the XP systems media player to copy it, use another program like Nero or somesuch. That is how I do my copying. If you look, you can find copying (burning) programs on the web and download them. If you've bought a CD burner, there should be a copy of a third party CD burning program that was enclosed with the drive.
I still use the Micro-shaft system for an OS, but I've got third party software for just about everything else I do. The only MS built-ins I do use are Explorer and Outlook.
As a shot in the dark, have you checked the file's attributes, and your Windows account, to see if you're allowed to copy and/or move it?

Speaking of which, I used to do quite a lot of experimentation and program writing. I used to have to clear out my hard drive at least once a year. The latest time I did, XP refused to let me auto-register and auto-activate it. I had to call an 800 number at Microsoft to get a special code to do it.
When I asked the guy at the other end about it, he said that was to stop people from putting the one copy of the OS onto many computers. OK, reasonable explanation, but why not just reset the counter at the Microsoft HQ server to re-enable the product registration? Now, every time I reload it, I have to call again. And how about when support for the OS ends? Will you be able to reload it? Or will the MS server disable it every time then?
Microsoft has to get their money, never mind that most people get the OS with a new computer. Hey Microsoft, are you listening? No wonder people are pushing open source operating systems and software. Don't you know that the tighter you squeeze your fist the less money you can put or hold in it?

Get a Debian derived distribution preferably one that best supports multi media. As suggested you probably could use some free third party software.
I use this one
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Works pretty well, at least it doesn't incorporate DRM...

To those who suggested getting rid of Windows...well, a mighty fine dream, but a totally impractical solution.
To Glen, who reminded me of Nero, which I have, thanks for the suggestion. I'll bet that'll do the job for me.
As it turns out, Windows Media player sez it ripped the tracks to mp3, and probably did, now all I have to do is find 'em...they're not where they should be. Argh!
