Mother and child write fake essay claiming husband and father died in Iraq to win Hannah Montana tickets. (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/12/29/fake.essay.ap/index.html?iref=topnews)

So lying to get what you want is okay by mom? Some example she sets. The bowels of hell are too good for someone who claims a relative died in war just to get concert tickets. If I were a dog, I would lift my leg in their general direction. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Damn good thing she didn't lie us into a war by claiming mushroom clouds would descend on us. Then you'd really be pi**ed.

Hannah Montana tickets... sigh

I would give them the tickets and then make the mother go on stage and explain why she did what she did.

Heck, if the administration didn't lie us into this war she wouldn't have been able to lie her way into a set of tickets. I'm not condoning the lying part but when the people at the top lie you gotta expect some of the desperate people at the bottom are gonna lie too.

Worse is when you start lying to yourself.

You expect your politicians to lie to you.

You guys are so heartless, don't you know that the essay was just "taken out of context"?

Besides, the little girl is having substance abuse problems and she's seeking therapy.

The essay was written the "next town over" from me. Garland shares a good part of the eastern border of Richardson.

Now, I agree that the subject was tasteless and the mother probably had a "hand" in choosing the subject. Unfortunately, there was nothing in the rules of the essay contest that even "hinted" that the topic had to be a true story. I "suspect" that, due to the particular "prize" for winning the contest, that there definitely were other entries that "stretched the truth".

As such, the "blame" needs to be equally shared between the contest sponsor and the mother of the winner. The sponsor really needs to have rules that are very specific in order to be able to legally disqualify such blatantly false entries in the future. There was an article in today's edition of the Dallas Morning News stating that the sponsor had reversed their previous statement that they would still award the prize to the girl from Garland

However, cay you say "law suit"! The mother is already referring any telephone calls to her lawyer. It is unfortunate that the 6 year-old girl is being subjected to this primarily because of her mother. But, since the rules of the contest were extremely broad the essay definitely did not violate any rules and, at least in my opinion, the sponsor will be forced to allow the girl to attend the concert in accordance with the original award. Now the "recognition of being "the winner" is another matter. Otherwise, the company will probably be forced into some pretty extensive financial "compensation".

Yet another case of moral vs. ethical standards...which is a shame since they should be one and the same instead of two different standards.

What do you expect from these kids, they are taught to lie from an early age, like there's a Santa and the Boogieman, Jesus, and God, mushroom clouds, WMD's, yellow cake, if the President can get away with lying to the American people then this little gal should have her tickets...

Hannah Montana is the hottest star to come along to tween girls in decades, the last being Britany Spears and Lindsay Lohan. Look how they turned out!

She is nearly talentless. She can't sing and her idea of dancing is marching on stage. If daddy wasn't a star she would be nothing. She is, however, proof of how much control the media has over some (many) people's lives.

Oh please. If the mom and daughter agree to have dear old dad hauled off to Iraq and executed, can they have the tickets then? It could be a useful philosophical exercise in the value of ethics -- that is if the poor father isn't too nervous over their decision.

I agree. The part that I have the most problem with is NOT that the essay does not represent the truth, but rather, that the essay does not represent the child's work.
