I don't know much about PC's and even less about laptops.

I have been considering buying a laptop but have always been concerned about the smallness of the text compared to a desktop. I'm approaching 70 and having looked at my grandaughters laptop using Vista the text is very small and the colouring is not as distinct as my PC using Windows 98.

There are some things I'd like to know.

Is it possible to increase the size of the text on a laptop with a 15.4 screen using Vista ? In other words, I can increase the size of the QRZ text on my PC, could I do it on a laptop ?

If the answer is no, could I download another system such as Firefox or Opera that would allow me do this.?

My shack computer, used, bought very cheap (US $35) has XP, is used only for PSK, and it has a facility to change the XP page design to the original Windows style, which I prefer, because its sharper, and the colours are not so wishy -washy, and for me, easier to read. Is this facility available with Vista ?

Appreciate any answers,

kind regards, Mel G0GQK

You can increase the text size in Internet Explorer and/or use a smaller screen resolution perhaps 800x600. Doing both might increase the text size to a more readable size.

Hello Mel,
In Firefox text sizes are settable. In fact there is a minimum text size setting which helps me greatly.

Ok fella's thanks for the answers. Using Vista is it possible, as with XP, to change the page style to the text as used with original Windows ?

You should be able to revert Windows Vista to a theme and color scheme that looks more like older versions of windows. This is usually called "Classic Mode".

I'm about 90% positive you can do it, but I'm not sure how.

You dont want to do that on a laptop - usually the LCD screen is optimized for it's maximum resolution.

You want to hit settings (same place to change the res), advanced and change the DPI (dots per inch) setting.

Correct on IE - if you have a mouse with wheel hold down CONTROL and run the wheel up & down.

hi mel, you can change the windows vista theme to a windows 9x theme in the same way you would do it on the older operating system, Theres just about one more menu to use. I use vista and my eyesight is poor, but however i do find that vista has a sharper more readable fint than the other operating systems. You could also increase the screen resolution size if this helps you see your qsos better. Hope this helps

This is a good feature, but doesn't work on all screens, don't know why.
