There are a lot of things that slow down Windows, but by FAR the biggest source of OS cholesterol is unnecessary services. The above article tells you the bare bones services that need to run in XP. This is what I use, and my machine is up and running in about 50 seconds....pretty fast for any winders box.

I do a daily check to make sure no additional services are installed without my knowledge. If I EVER see anything other than these bare bones services I DELETE them immediately.

I have always trimmed down what starts up on my machine, but the thing that really boggs down my machine is the firewall and the anti virus stuff. Since I am on cable, there is just no doing without it. Without the firewall etc this machine is lightning fast.

Eric:
I shutdown my XP to Hibernate. It only takes about 20seconds to come back on.

I leave all my computers running. Though my mac goes to sleep after a while.

As a rule I've always disabled unneccessary services, but this was for security reasons. The faster bootup time was a nice side benefit.

RE: the title, no it doesn't ! ! !

After I "wake up" my computer, I do not have a mouse ! Just an arrow glued to the screen. It doesn't move.

Any ideas! I'm using an old IBM mouse, with Kensington driver. Works just great til I shut 'er down.

is it a PS/2 mouse or USB? Sounds like it might be PS/2. Some PS/2 deviced (keyboard/mouse) don't do well with the sleep/suspend functions. Try a USB mouse.

"old IBM mouse" Read that buss mouse - I guess you would say "PS/2" Ain't worth messing around with. Just wondered what I would gain. I can wait for under 2 minutes for my computer to boot, any old time.

Thanks anyway 73, Jim

While trimming down the services or programs that start on startup can speed up windows, I don't agree with the article.

IPSec is used for VPN connections. Does anyone know why the average use needs VPN? Hint VPN stands for Virtual Private Network (usually used by people who need to log into their work network from home).

Another nifty trick (besides msconfig, which I am assuming they want you to use) is to go into the control panel, click on administrative tools (you will need to be logged in as an admin), and then click on Services. You can also disable alot of services that you do not need.

Less crap starting when you start your computer means faster boot up and more free memory for the programs you want to run.

Computers are the hardest thing in the world to make work. I have a laptop that is dual boot, meaning I can start it on Windows 98SE or Windows 2000. In 98SE the serial port works great. in 2000 ZILCH! Already jumped through every hoop known to man and it is just hopeless. The Experts answer? Get a new Laptop! But being impoverished means I have to make do with this Pre-Iraq war special! It works on APRS, Packet and PSK31 but not Winlink. Nowadays, however, all laptops have only USB ports, no more serial. There are USB to serial adapters, but it would be nice if it was still built in. Don't know how Vista will like APRS DOS and programs like that. So, back to the Pre-War Laptop!

I keep all of the computers in my office/shack on 24/7. I reduced the power bill by converting all of the displays to LCD screens.

There is no more comforting sound than the whirr of power supply cooling fans with the occasional soft rattle from the hard drives.

Three Macs, one Gateway running XP for the APRS-IS weather data feed.

I have 2 boxes here. One is a linux box that stays on 24/7 running XASTIR for APRS. The other is my windoze box that I shut down at night. It only takes my computer about a min to boot up from dead off. What speed me up is more memory. I had 1 gig and I just doubled that to 2 and it smokes now. My old laptop used to take forever to boot as well and I upped it to 2 gigs as well and it cut the boot time down considerably.

I keep everything on also. I turn off the screens if I'm going to be gone for extended periods of time.

I too run a weather station, and for it to work properly, the computer has to keep running to upload the data every 5 mins. I keep an APRS screen up to see whos moving around me too.

Usually after about 2 weeks I notice the memory consumption has slowly crept up due to memory leaks or whatever. Thats when I reboot.

I used to have 2 computers but one of them finally died. Eventually I hope to have a second one again and then I'll run the weather station and other stuff on it again to 'reduce the load' on the main computer. But I don't really game much and the stuff I do doesn't overtax the computer. It may get close to 100% CPU sometimes when I have a bunch going, but thats only when I'm watching video. Maybe.

I do clean all the fans every month though. You'd be surprised how quick you can build yourself a dust bunny farm in a machine http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
