I was thinking that PSKMail (http://pskmail.wikispaces.com/) would work well for passing some traffic in an ARES/RACES situation. #Most everyone has a laptop, and said laptop could boot into a live Linux distro similar to Harv's Hamshack Hack (http://hamshack-hack.sourceforge.net/). #Linux, unlike Windoze is well suited to some older laptops. #The ARES/RACES group could keep whatever number of these live distros ready to go for a mininal investment. #It would take for instance, 7 hams with laptops and 7 different setups, and get them all on the same page and interacting seamlessly in a short amount of time.
I ramble. #I'd like some input on this idea.
Check out the Fldigi thread in the Computers and Software forum and you'll find a link to an already existing Puppy Linux live CD already setup to run PSKMail.
Or, check W1HKJ.com (http://www.w1hkj.com) for EMCpup.

I am trying to decide if this is a useful post, or just more “LINUX is Great and Microsoft isn't” posting. The use of Windoze to refer to Windows is a dead giveaway.

Decide all you like, I've been calling it Windoze since 3.1.

Try Kubuntu or Ubuntu. They are great distros and I use Kubuntu for my APRS station here. Runs fine on a 1ghz, 1gig memory, 20 gig hard drive with no problems. Almost impossible to crash the thing unlike windoze. (And I have been calling it that since 95 too. LOL). They have live CD's as well that you can boot straight from the CD Drive.
There's a pretty good article in Steve Ford's January column in QST on how to run PSKMail from within Winders using an emulator.
I wouldn't do it that way but if your a Linux-phobe and want to try it...........

remove the possibility of linking it to the internet to download e-mail and it sounds like a decent little narrowband means of operating out and about and still getting important updates, otherwise it's in violation of 3rd party traffic rules the same as winlids the only differance's are this one doesn't eat the whole sub band to do it and everyone can keep tabs on who' and what is being transmitted without having to buy proprietary equipment to do it, far easier to police and far harder to abuse, once winlid switches to pac3 were sol for being able to determin if it's being used for legitimet transfer or downloading e-mail from every spam site on the net, packet msg's or pskmail messages between hams is totally allowable, linking it to the internet for e-mail retrieval isn't an acceptable use just because it takes up far less spectrum with less chance of qrm...

I would very much be interested if there was a Windoze version. And I love Windoze. :-)
I dont run an OS I dont know, and I dont know Nix.

OK, I'm more concerned with the concept than the platform. Flavor of Linux isn't important, and as far as connecting to the internet to get email, that isn't even on the scope for the application I'm suggesting. I'm more interested in using it to create a network between the hospital, EOC and Red Cross shelter and such.

Take N0NB's advice and download the Puppy Linux ISO image with PSKMail from the link in the above post. This system works very well with most computers, though some laptops may have some driver issues. Only way to find that out is to run it.
It is free, and you can burn as many copies as you need to give your idea a fair test.
Report back and let us all know how it works.

Hmmm maybe it is true - Linux is great and Windoze sucks?
Also to the poster who stated he uses windows rather than an OS - windows IS an OS.
Just not a very good one if you want reliability and security.
One thing I can honestly say - I have run both - and still am. About once a week (XP) if I don't reboot this thing, it will get really sluggish - runs out of resources. That is because of the microsoft method of not releasing all resources when you close a windows application.
I have a linux box which is a 486 with 120 Mgs of RAM, 3 Gig hard drive and it's running my server including hosting 4 web sites complete with DNS, email server, and even 4 list servers. I have had this thing running for over a year without even a keyboard, mouse, or monitor on it. It is running as well today as it was put online a year ago. Never have had to reboot it or do anything to it rather than install some new versions of certain programs. Didn't have to - just wanted newer stuff running on it for more capabilities. All work is done thru SSH rather than at the box itself. It has NEVER been hacked and has NEVER gotten any kind of a virus. It doesn't happen on Linux.
So, if you compare the two OS, Linux clearly demonstrates it superiority. It continuously outperforms Windows even comparing a 486 with Linux to a 3 Gig running XP Pro.
Sorry - just the facts.

Sheesh.... This must be one of the most hair-splitting, defensive communities I've ever encountered.
Lets set our personal opinions aside for just a half-second and consider the idea of ARQ-enabled PSK transmissions. Regardless of OS or email debates, I think that this type of error detection in it self could be a great leap forward for the second most bandwidth friendly mode out there.

I think your right.
I run both Window and Linux as both have their places. Would run a Mac if someone felt, in the Holiday spirit, so moved to donate a Mac box to me.
EMCpup is interesting, especially psk with arq (and it does boot on a Windows OS machine).
