echolink

Well guys I will like to work out the whole 50states of US through echolink as I recently got my technician. I got echolink set up but I don't know how to operate it http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif I know how to connect to servers and stuff, but still do not know how to call people. Anyone willing to help and wanting to have a qso with me out of texas would be great http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif. It would be really nice to work the whole US before the end of January. Thanks and take care! 73s to you all.

There really isn't much to it. Just connect to a link (callsign-L) which is linked into a repeater, and or a repeater that has echolink connected directly to it (callsign-R)

Once you connect, just come up and state your callsign and that you're monitoring. Give it a moment or two and see if someone comes back to you. If not camp for a little bit and see if someone else comes on the repeater saying their monitoring. Or you could just say "this is KE5RRH is anyone monitoring?"

That's basically it. Don't come on there and start calling CQ. It isn't proper etiquette. Oh and you do realize that you can't achieve any kind of award for doing this, right? You should take some of your free time and get the General class exam book and study it. And take lots of practice exams on qrz or hamtest.com and when you're up to 80% or higher, go take the test. Then you can do W.A.S. for real.

There is no such thing as "worked all states - echolink". You need to find a elmer. Do as the last poster said and study for advancement and get on the air. As I'm sure you will find out, echolink is not really radio. Heck you could just as easily try to phone each state by cell phone. No offense intented but you won't find a whole lot of support for echolink on this quarter. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You can go for working all states on Echolink but there are no awards for anything on Echolink. I guess you can do WAS for your own personal achievement. I myself am trying something new and as corny as it sounds I'm doing it for fun.

When dealing with the email at editor at QRZ.com we get about 40-50 a day from all over the world. I'm going to see how long it takes me to do WAS and DXCC from the countries and states I deal with.

I was just recently looking into my DXCC standings and I know I have at least 225 countries confirmed. I downloaded the DXCC standings list and I found I only have 182 submitted to the ARRL. So I emailed ARRL and I'm getting a copy of the countries I submitted and then submit the ones I haven't done so yet.

It would be fun to try to work all states via echolink.

If you want to, you can make up your own award for WAS echolink, have it printed up (make it really nice, something people would work to get and be proud to frame in their shack), advertise it in the various ham publications, and you can issue the award and be the administrator of the award.

I actually think this would be a good idea.
Why ?
Because it might promote more activity on the air. ANYTHING that promotes more activity on the air from hams is a good thing. Espeically new hams. It would allow techs to get into award chasing, it would populate all these repeaters sitting there vacant, and it would give the rest of us someone to talk to that arn't the same guys we have talked to every day on our local repeater for the last 20 years.

Go for it.

The only problem is: I can get on echolink with out EVER being "on the air". That's the issue in my opinion. If he uses his handheld or base and connects via a repeater and then VIA the "internet" to another repeater that kind of is a contact.

When I can sit at my computer and access echolink and call another ham via his computer and NEVER use a RADIO or the AIRWAVES; then I'm sorry that is not ham radio. That is voip and nothing more. To each his own. Instead of playing on echolink, study for the general, upgrade and get on the air for real. Maybe what he should do before he ever even takes the test is to find out what YOUR idea of ham radio is, so he can conform to your idea of what is real ham radio is.

That way he can suppress what he thinks is fun before it gets out of hand and he enjoys himself.

Now you got it!!!! Seriously though that's not really necessary. Listen, If echolink is what trips his (or yours for that matter) trigger then fine. I have no problem with that. Enjoy yourself. Work all states.........Work Echolink dxcc.
