View Full Version : Kingsont USB Drive
I have a early issue 256mb Kingston USB drive. #I cannot find a driver for this device. #It works in other computers, but not my office computer. #Anyone know where I might be able to get a driver without paying more for the driver than what the USB drive is worth.

Is this a thumb drive?
I've never had to load drivers for any make or model of thumb drive I've used.
Of course, here at work we disable the USB system in our XP images so people can't use thumb drives. BIG, HUGE security risk in a financial institution.

Three sites I went to confirmed that M$ 2000 & XP do NOT need drivers BUT 98 DOES. It is supposed to be provided with the drive.
So if the computer you are trying to run this on is a "98", then you will need to find what happened to the driver you should already have.
If it is XP, then there is something wrong in your computer that will take some troubleshooting.

does your office allow the use of thumb drives? many don't, and their i.t. departments do stuff which keep thumb drives from being properly recognized.

Bill,
If you are trying to run the drive in a Windows 98SE box, they still have drivers for two of their thumb drives on their web site:
DTII/XX and DTII+/XX USB DataTraveler Windows 98SE Driver (http://www.kingston.com/support/USBFLASHDRIVES/downloads/default.asp?s=kusb4)
KUSBDTE/XX USB DataTraveler Elite Windows 98SE Driver (http://www.kingston.com/support/USBFLASHDRIVES/downloads/default.asp?s=kusb5)
Unfortunately, they have discontinued Win 98SE support for all of their other drives. Hopefully, yours is one of those listed!

Yes it is a thumb drive and it is a data traveler. I have found the 98 drivers, but I use Win XP. It is strange that the thumb drive works in other XP machines however.

Have you tried any other USB devices in the machine that won't recognize the thumb drive? It could be that the drivers for the Universal Serial Bus aren't installed, or are corrupt.
Try this:
Right-Click the "My Computer" Icon on your desktop ... click "Properties", then the "Hardware" tab, then "Device Manager". Look near the bottom of the list, and click the "+" sign adjacent to the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" Icon to expand the list. You should see at least a couple of " ... ... PCI to USB Open Host Controller" lines, and if the machine is USB II capable, a line like " ... PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller". These will vary according to the chipset on your MB (mine say "SiS PCI to USB Open Host Controller" on the laptop I'm using). Right-Click each of these, click properties, and make sure none of them have been disabled. Windows should state if each device is working properly on that properties tab.
It's worth a look!
Let me know if any driver problems are indicated, like "Driver not installed". You can select "Update Driver", and allow Windows to search your hard drive, and the internet for updated drivers, but I would set a new restore point before doing that, just to be safe.

Another long shot ... this laptop I'm using now will go into Standby, then Hibernate modes. When I bring the laptop out of Standby or Hibernate, sometimes it will not recognize a USB thumb drive. Rebooting the machine clears that up!

After re-reading the thread, I have to agree that if this is a corp. computer, most likely they have the use of USB devices deactivated. - you may be S.O.L.

Thumb drives should work on any working USB port . . . No driver needed, and they work on either Windows or Linux.
I found out when my port didn't work, it wasn't activated in the BIOS. Another mobo I got has USB, but no cables from the jacks on the board to the outside world.

if your it department is using "safeboot" ,as mine is, inserting a thumb drive will cause all data on said drive to be erased! ooops!

XP may not require drivers, but Win98SE DOES!
You should be able to get the rear bracket with two USB sockets at any good computer shop, or places like FRY's.
Just be careful connecting to the mobo, to make sure you have the connections correct. there's no standard pin orientation on mobos. (Best to check the USB sockets with a voltmeter after installing; make sure +5 V and ground are on the proper pins, or ELSE!

Is it YOUR computer in your office, or does the company own it? If the company owns it and only 'allows' you the useage of it, they have more than likely turned USB storage access 'off'.
Companies do this for several reasons, the most often used reason is so you can't take a copy of any software on the computer for your own use on another computer. Turning off the usb storage access may also be for other reasons.
If you have administrator privileges on the machine, you can reenable thumbdrive access, possibly through the control panel.
