Hi All,
Kinda new at this computer stuff so please bear with me. I "had" to get a new computer and it came with the Vista OS. Now I hear that my old programs used to program my radios probably won't work. Specifically for my Yaesu ft 7800 and Kenwood TMG707A. Any ideas? Any places I can possibly get updates that would work? Anyone already done that/been there?
Thanks for your help

Gotta ask...
Have you actually tried to run any of your old programs on this new PC?

In my limited experience with vista, I found that most programs work, but you may need to "run as administrator" when installing them, by right-clicking & choosing that option on the .exe file.
I also created a command line icon on the desktop by right-clicking and choosing "new"-->"shortcut" and typing in cmd (which is for the dos prompt).
Then I can right-click on that, run as administrator, and navigate to any installation file, and install it with those privileges.

I am a MS Vista beta tester (now 18+ months) -- so I have been "through hell and back" with this OS. #
FYI, the MS Vista Service Pack 1 is planned to be released next week according to my sources, to address various issues.
Regarding applications and programs that you may have - YOU must check with each company or software writer for MS Vista support. #
NO magic bullet here -- Intel even needed to update firmware with some of their motherboards for Vista support. #Did I say that a visit to the dentist is less painful?
As K4AVL pointed out in his response, SOME programs will work when you "Run as Administrator" -- and they will work on Vista. #
The enchanced security features of Vista are still issue with other programs.

Kenwood provides these programs (and updates) FREE.
These applications are professionally written and sometimes by same group that writes their Land Mobile software.
The Memory Control Program (MCP) for your Kenwood G707 can be found here:

Yaesu and Icom elected several years ago to use RT Systems (some "exclusive deal" years ago -- that no one seems to want to talk about now)-- you have to purchase their ADMS program, support was poor and often you had to purchase the upgrades. #
RT Systems did introduce a "new" Version 3.0 -- that is said to be an improvement -- I sold my radios and ADMS software.

IF you have an RT Systems program, check their web site for further information on MS Vista or upgrades.

Thanks for the replies. And no, never tried it yet. I thought I'd ask first before I screwed something up. Don't have alot of confidence when using these computers, seems like it anyway. This Vista is a big change for me as well. I guess I just don't like change when I was happy with what I had. FYI the reason for the new computer was that the old one came up with the blue screen of death! Couldn't get it to do anything.
Oh well, thanks again.

The Vista SP1 Service Pack is planned for release "during the first quarter of 2008," according to MS and others. What is being released to the public next week is a BETA of the SP1 -- technically a "release candidate."
IOW, proceed at your own risk; if you are not well versed in Vista, it may be better to hold off until the final variant of the SP is released.

i would have figured out what the blue screen was caused from before i went out and bought a new computer, if you were going to do something that drastic i would have booted up from a disk or something to see if it was the OS and if it was reformated it. #never learn if you dont screw something up btw. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif so i guess when i blow up my radio i will properly know how to use it http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Tried that stuff, that is turning on with OS disc to try to wipe disc and start over but to no avail. I tried the other disc used for recovery and it didn't work either.
The plus side of this is that the wife wanted a newer computer since ours was 5-6 yrs old and never did work all that great. Sooo time to listen to the wife I guess http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Thanks again
