Great ham site (http://hamradioindia.com/Hri-hbrew/)
Well, homebrewing is alive and well in India. It's probably a lot easier to get components in Calcutta than it is at Radio Shack. Go figure.

what the hell do you expect
from
radio shack anyhow
there is a world
of easy to find and buy parts out there
all electronics, digikey, dans small parts,
circuit specialists, mouser, antique electronics supply,
play things of the past,
and thats just 7 out of over 40 parts suppliers
i know of
and there is still loads of parts to be found
inside stuff people throw out
nothing like finding
a dead tube hifi tuner amp
full of the good stuff
in front of somebodys house
on trash pick up day
anybody that wants to build will
thats it
don't blame radio shack

I've been on this site for a few years now - really neat project info.
I found that when I started an interest in the BitX 20 project a few years ago.
Turns out, many hams cannot afford high end radios and such so they build them out of necessity - kinda like our hams.... like 60+ years ago!
Good stuff indeed!

2 things suck about the online suppliers, 1: #trying to dig through a pdf catalog to find that special part, hours spent and you can't zero in on it yet I can go to the local pieces parts shop pick up the mouser catalog and flip through it for 5 min and find exactly what I want (pisses the guy off because I write the pn down come home and order it rather than pay him 4x retail) rat shack may be getting more parts in the near future so there is hope for those doh I ran out of x regularly used component moments, but by and large you will still have to order most of the not so common stuff, wich leads us to the second thing, shipping costs, $5 soldering iron tip from rat shack, it's one of the "specialty" items (how I'm not sure as the duel wattage "station" it goes to has been on the market for 20 years now) that they will only ship directly to you, for a meager $7 shipping fee, give me a break, I know for a fact I can mail the same damn thing for 2 stamps or less, and they all do it not just rat shack, my last order from mouser shipped in roughly a cigar box sized container, $23 worth of parts and $7 to ship it via ups, 1st class mail would have been $6 I think but who knows when it would have shown up, it's not entirely the companies that are price gougeing, seems most are held to a minimum fee for 1pound of weight, anything less and the consumer takes it in the shorts, would be nice indeed to live in an area with a store having a broad selection of pieces parts minus the nte logo ($4 for a 25 cent 4n25) or junk stores with a decent selection at less than "premium" ebay prices, either way the retail market has deemed anything that can be classified as a hobby or pastime = 300% minimum markup, given that most of the parts we use regularly are becoming obsolete or limited run items it only makes things worse, in other countries the parts are still available for a sane price so homebrew is still a very cost effective alternative, here by the time you get done sourceing and purchasing items from multiple distributors you can come close to buying a prebuilt appliance, is it any wonder that homebrewing is an art form that is holding on by it's fingernails?
I let go of it for many years, now that I've gotten a fresh taste I can honestly say they will pry my cold dead fingers from the hobby after I die, there is so much to learn and a wealth of guys like Clint KK7UQ and Jim AG3Y who will take the time to answer even the blindest of questions, like trying to substitute 4n25 for H11L1M due to the H11 being backordered till feb, involving major change to the circuit, Jim explained the differances nicely and Clint went as far as to rework his original schematic to use the 4n25 tnx guys it is greatly appreciated your help turned a nightmare into a speedbump.
oops, back on subject, the hamradioindia site is an excellent source for projects, I troll there for something new to put my frankenstein skills to use on regularly.

I think there is a lot of home brewing going on in India. One of the people I work with is from India and his brother-in-law is a ham who has built all his own equipment and is constantly coming up with new projects. My co-worker tells me that home brew is the norm in India.

Hello.
India and Pakistan are the place for homebrew.
India, having been ruled by the Brits for so long, do English.
Pakistan, on the other hand, only do Urdu, something In can not do.

anyone have a line on someone with H11L1M optocouplers in stock? mouser is backordered till feb, none of the other usual suspects have any in stock, and the local parts shop wants $7 for a 73 cent part, principle alone dictates not paying 1000% markup simply because he has 1 in his store, I'll go without the fast cat interface before I get bent over that bad.

And as well as all that, the Indians were not home brewing spark transmitters when Queen Victoria was on the throne. And, there is nothing COOL in India, only hot.

The first Indian Amateur was licenced in 1924 (?) somewhere around that time. so NO , spark gaps were outdated by then (well actually a couple of years later)

Thanks much Joe, added jameco to my pieces parts sites folder, have 10 of them on the way now, hopefully as I rebuild my parts collection I won't end up in a jam like this again, and if your ever in IF look me up, that and whatever you do stay away from Schwendiman's unless you have $ to burn.

AAX:
Although spark transmitters were "outlawed" in the United States in the late 1920s they were still legal to use in various other parts of the world until 1939. They were primarily used by marine stations (shipboard and a few costal). However, there were a relatively few amateur radio stations that used spark well into the 1930s.
