View Full Version : Rumor: Peter W Dahl going out of business
I heard from a local ham via our club's mailing list that Peter W. Dahl company is going out of business.
Apparently Peter is very ill and he is letting the business fall apart. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
If true, this is a great loss for us. I wonder where I'll get my big transformers for my homebrew amplifiers?

Thordarson, perhaps?
(If they're still in business...)
Hammond?
If there's a market, someone will step in to fill the void...

There is nothing on the Dahl website. Now he has generally gone out of the amateur radio market in favor of his large commercial market. That happened over a year ago.
This particular subject came up on a couple of E-Mail reflectors last night. So far, since there is nothing on the website, it remains unconfirmed.

I haven't seen Peter in a very long time. I met him at his shop in El Paso back in the early 90's and visited him quite a few times up until 1996.
At that time he was talking about moving some of his business across the border into Juarez. This was due in part to labor costs and also other considerations. I recall his primary business was industrial transformers. A lot of what was doing at the time were transformers for industrial lighting systems. He also had a very nice ham station set up in his office but I don't think he got to use it all that much.
Peter is a very nice guy and I certainly hope he is well.

I bought a pair of HV capacitors for a Harris TV-30 L a couple of months back, and talked to Peter on the phone. He sounded just fine, and the NWL oil-Filled caps are just dandy. The transmitter likes them, and the Peter Dahl price was better than going direct to NWL.

The best transfomers built in Italy, some are home build and sold at Ham shops, Last year I have seen a lot of stuff in those shops in Jenewa, I bought a home made power supply from a shop of 90AMPS and real sold, did not travel with my but did reach home by fright, one week later and I use it now, looks out of date but build solid, we also use a lot of Italian transformers here and other electrical equipment.
Wish you a good luck with your projet my friend.

Guys on the AMPS reflector this morning are confirming personal telephone communication with Peter and that he's closing up on 12/31/07.
I didn't call, personally.

Yeah, I think I may have to buy Italian or Chinese transformers now.
But with the low value of the dollar, it's going to hurt!

Someone here that has a lot of money should offer to buy all the tooling and keep producing transformers.
With Ameritron buying all their iron from Dahl my money is on MFJ buying Dahl at pennies on the dollar.

There are several persons who have been rewinding transformers for the amateur radio market for some time. Their reputations are just as good as Peter Dahl and their prices are less.
Although Hammond is the best known manufacturer of transformers there are others who produce transformers on a commercial basis and, quite often, are priced less.
Peter Dahl has been producing transformers and rewinding transformers for quite a while. It is sad to see him go. However, since he has been trying to greatly reduce the work that he does for amateur radio operators for some time, his going out-of-business will not have as great an effect as it would seem.

I hate to see it too as Peter Dahl makes (made) excellent products and their service was great.
Then again, it is selfish of us to want him to continue if he is ill. Perhaps another company will pick up his product line and keep it going. We can hope for that.

I'm truly sorry to hear that Pete has been diagnosed with Parkisons. I wish him all the best and hope the docs can do something to make his life better.

Sorry to hear about Mr. Dahl - my Dad's also has Parkinson's and it's nothing I'd wish on anyone.
Hope he get to enjoy some retirement.

I have Parkinsons and yes, it sucks big time. I don't know that I'll ever be able to get back on CW. Yes I know I can use a keyboard but that's not really how I want to operate. And my typing is becoming difficult too, particularly troubling since I can no longer write by hand.
My best wishes go out to Mr Dahl.

The handwriting was on the wall a while back when orders were cancelled and monies returned. #
I was out of the Hysteresis loop so, I was a bit taken back when the announcement was made; after speaking personally with Mr. Dahl (while placing orders) and having been a customer of Pete's for over 20 years my first thought was, 'Who's gonna fill the void"?
The "passing" of this company (if it really goes by the wayside) will not be noted or missed by the average Amateur (appliance) operator. #I have a spiral bound product catalog listing all the offerings from the PW Dahl Company and, I am waiting for someone to step up and fill those shoes. #I heard that "Gary" was going to take it over.
'Heavy Iron" is still needed on a specialized basis.
Thanks Pete...
