Hello, well Im planning to do some APRS still waiting to get a radio, im most likely going with the Yaesu VX-7R. My choice of the APRS is TinyTrak3plus, will that work with the radio? Oh also, can I hook that to my radio and to the computer and then use a gps receiver to connect it to the laptop through usb or do I need to connect it to the tinytrak3? One more thing, what software do you recommend*xp but linux is fine* that is simple and easy to use? Thanks! 73

Well what type of aprs are you wanting to do. There is mobile and fixed stations. If you are using a mobile then you might want to consider a Kenwood D-700 as it has all the APRS features built into the radio. All you need is a GPS. That is my mobile set up for my KC7GNM-5 station. The tinytrack is good but you need to program it via the computer and I am not sure if you could use it like a tnc for aprs on the computer. I use a Kantronics KPC-3 for my fixed station with a Kenwood TM-20B. That is an old Kenwood radio that has no pl and no external speaker. It works great for packet or aprs. I run XASTIR for Linux under Kubuntu and have an internet gateway as well. Look for my callsign with no ssid on findu.com. Using a VX-7R is not really recommended as it is a handheld and not made for long duration use like older radios were. Also getting the cable made for one of those is a pain. I know I have one too but I use it strictly for voice. Hope I helped ya out.
