Looking ahead this weekend to the ARRL 10 Meter contest: #What are your plans and what do you think will be happening propagation-wise? #I will be giving it a good shot during the late morning and afternoon on Saturday and then some time again on Sunday. #I know there won't be a whole lot of action. #I am hoping that enough people get on that we can energize the band. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif The good thing about this contest during this part of the solar cycle is that no one can complain we are running them off the band! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I intend a single mode operation--all CW. I'll probably call CQ for long periods of time without hearing a peep of a response--given CDX lately.
I'll see if I can get a couple contacts in from the mobile. I'm working all weekend, so I won't have time for much of an effort. At least I may be able to provide some points for y'all...

I'll look for you and work you if I hear you. Don't know how much time I'll have to get on the air though.

I sometimes call my 10M contest operation, 'barefoot in the snow.'
I don't need no stinking LIDear.

Thanks for the 10 meter contest heads up. I just got my 20 through 10 meter vertical dipole up last weekend, so the contest will give me a chance to "test drive" its 10 meter performance.
As for band conditions who knows, I guess that why E layer propagation is called sporadic.

Try this link: http://www.arrl.org/qst/propcharts/2007/12/mid.pdf
It is a series of charts with frequencies on the left and the time of day (UTC) along the bottom. These 12 charts show propagation predictions from the Midwest to various spots on the face of the earth. The good news is that it appears as if there will be openings at or above 28 MHz to several places around the globe in December.
Text versions of the ARRL propagation bulletins are at http://www.arrl.org/w1aw/prop/. If you are an ARRL member, you can get the report emailed to you every week.
The propagation charts are available on a monthly basis from the East Coast, Mid-USA, West Coast, Alaska/Hawaii at http://www.arrl.org/qst/propcharts/
Remember, these are predications and not guarantees!

I'm assuming he's trying to say "Georgia Boy" and not the other with a long "a" in "gaboy37". Otherwise you may want to shine an ultraviolet light on the front panel.

Certainly going to be giving a listen and a call or two - I'm hoping to work some tech's. Sort of wish I had a beam...sob.

27.185 - the best 10m beacon?
http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I may tune up there, technically I think my AV-18 is meant to be a 5/8 on 12/10m so I'm pretty sure I can spit some RF out of it....how much gets eaten by the ground is another story!

Check out THIS to see what it was like in Sept. 2000. Something to look forward to! I have never seen this program before, pretty cool.

Check Propnet (http://www.propnet.org/) .
I see there was an opening from Texas to 6-land about 3 minutes ago.
I plan on being on this weekend. Once again, I'm going to do it QRP mixed mode. #If we're lucky, the secondary winter Sporadic E peak will occur during the contest. #This was the case 2 years ago. #And that contest was a blast. #If it's dead all weekend, I'll be lucky if I make 10 QSOs. #It should be a lot like the June VHF QSO Party - when it's happening, it's happening. #But when it's dead, 10 (like 6m) is about as exciting as watching paint dry. #I wonder if anybody is going to do meteor skeds, like they do during the VHF contests, on 6 & 2m.

10 M-
Queue Sarah, Sarah (That which happens will happen).
But 10 is a cool band, and may be my favorite. Pse check out the beacons in the 28.200-.300 area and see what you hear. If it opens up to your area, getr ready for a pileup (once got one so bad I gave up and 15 min later, there was nothing.
Will be listening around 28.670 fer slowscan (es SSB, as long as you don't QRM SSTV) es wl tune lower from time to time.
But 10 will surprise everybody, so get ready fer it.

Hopefully be on phone off of my portable vertical early in the contest. If I can't get good results, I may switch to my dipole.
We'll see... Have to go out and about for a bit in the afternoon, if the snow is heading this way I'll be spending the early contest time putting snow tires on my car instead http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Yeah, he might have used a special lubricant on the knobs.

Inbetween Christmas shopping and going to parties, I hope to get on, and hope that 10 meters is open to at least somewhere.
If not I guess I will be taking 2 pills(aspirins) after calling and calling and not getting anyone.
Hope to see you on 10 meters

I remember my first 10M contest, in '95. CDX were terrible. On Friday night 3 hours into it, I had been calling CQ, listening with one ear to the radio, listening to Law and Order on a very small portable TV with the other. My rate was exactly 1 per hour, all in Ohio.
I got so excited, when I suddenly heard a very faint WL7 answer my CQ. I turned off Law and Order and I sent "?" He was so deep in the noise, that it took three tries to get the entire call sign. So I sent him my exchange.
When he sent me his exchange, he appended a /8 to his call, and indicated he was in Ohio. [DAMN!!!!!]

I reckon I'll tune up on the 28.300-500 range, see what I can hear... I don't have any real expectations other than to work what I can hear.

"Dave" sure is busy making a lot of amplifiers!
Just think though-as impure as that amp is, you could use it on 10 and probably annoy its target audience, 11m, quite easily!

I'll be spinning the VFO too.
Whether it will be a waste of time, or a success, only the propagation gods know for sure.
(I don't expect much, but you never know)
It can't hurt to try a bit.
Good Luck to all.

this morning there was a major cold front that moved south. i was hearing some ducting on a local repeater, so i checked out 10. it was WIDE open with very little QSB. i even did some slowscan and got P-5 comments.
anyway, i wanted to try some 10 PSK. spun the vfo to 28.120 and i was hearing some QRM so i tuned to it. it turned out to be a group of CB pirates on 28.125 AM, complete with roger beep and echo box. more tuning around found another group of them on 28.080.
it's gonna be "interesting" when the solar cycle really opens the band.

A little CW, RTTY and Pactor/packet would go a long way to brighten their day.
Especially at QRO levels.

N8YX, I agree a little QRO with a digital mode would do wonders for them. I just wonder if you QRM on purpose to someone that you know is on the band illegally, are you breaking the law?
k6jpd
12-05-2007, 11:49 PM
according to Reily, they have "no legal standing"
IE: you can't interfere with something that isn't legally there. ...... your mileage may vary

It looks like I really will be barefoot in the snow. Forecast is calling for another 1-3" of the stuff overninght tonight. I just shoveled 5" of it yesterday. So, before I get on the air, I gotta shovel again.
A merry white 10 meters to all!
