at that price the fool/buyer
most likely not use them

so he can show all his friends

A fool and his money are soon parted ...so its said.
If someone wants them badly enough they'll pay whatever price is necessary. The buyers loss...the sellers gain and amazement for those of us who watch it happen.

Anybody hear whether 6146s will make a good AUDIO amplifier ? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Ought to have an EXCELLENT top end !

Actually, there are four days left.....

These ARE the 'A' 6146s, not the later 'B', which were not really as rugged.

How I wish my Drake gear used these, instead of the silly, cheap at the time, sweep tubes.

How many Heath users, with gear from the 60s, wish they had 6146A finals...instead of (cheap at the time...) compactrons....

I KNOW $200 Plus sounds nuts, BUT, an old rig, run conservativly, with these tubes, will outlive the owner at this point. Compare that, to buying cheaper brand, possibly used, 6146Bs, and having to go through the hour plus job (yes, over an hour now that we are a bit older...) of taking the rig out of the case, unassembling the finals cage, reinserting, neutralizing, and reassembling and re-hooking up the radio. Maybe several times....

I too would LIKE to buy a pair of these at the prices I remember, just like gas..."Hey, boy, fill 'er up and check the tires, oil, and do a decent job on that windshield this time, and don't cross fold my green stamps, here's five bucks, keep the change, it's Christmass eve."

I helped out with the audio system in my church when I was a teenager. The PA had 6146s (four of them, if I remember correctly).

6146Bs are USELESS for Heathkit users. They are impossible to neutralize and thus are worth far less than 6146As. HOW this guy found clowns to bid up to $202 is completey astounding. I have a pair of 6146Bs right here on the desk, probably just as matched, that are totaly useless!!!! I'd be thrilled to get $5 apiece!

To potential boat anchor collectors...current ones know this...

6146's in boat anchor rigs are not that big a problem.

I've had many in boat anchors....

Apache....2 6146's
Valium....5 6146's
32S-3......2 6146's
Eico 720 1 6146

I didn't have to touch the 6146's in any of those rigs. The tubes just kept on keeping on with no attention. It's possible that a purist could have coaxed more power out by paying attention to the 6146's...but it'd only be an incremental improvement.

Love that tube!

Gates used 6146's in the modulator driver stage to modulate a pair of 833A's in one of the very old (late 40's early 50's) BC-1 series broadcast transmitters. I used to work at a station that had one of those old beasts for a standby TX.

Yes they do. Back in the mid-1960's I build two high fidelity amps using Williamson design and four 6146's, push-pull parallel for a cool 150 watts per channel per amp. The rest of the amp was a 12AX7/ECC83 input amp and cathode follower, 12AU7/ECC82 phase inverter, a pair of 6AQ5's as drivers that were DC coupled to the 6146's. The separate pre-amp / EQ feeding them was a Heathkit -- deemed the best of the era. Ran them into a pair of Warfdale WD series speakers.

Late in the '60's, when WA2INM and I were in the disco lighting and sound reinforcement business, we used them as our stage amps driving some interesting speakers that Larry designed. Each one stood about 9 feet high, 5 feet wide and 4 feet deep. The first 7 feet in front was a complete light show synced to music. The low frequency driver -- a pair of Electro Voice SRO 15's were side firing, The top two feet contained the Utah Audio A80BB1for mid range and an Altec horn high frequency driver. Each of these "Sound and Light Columns" had one of my amps bolted tightly in the base. We used a small (8 or 10 channel) Mackie mixing board -- usually fed off the house PA but could run stand alone using our mics.

If you ever visited any of the more popular NYC "disco's" of the late 1960's through early 1971 when the craze went away, you likely saw our handiwork. Either the afore mentioned "Sound and Light Columns" on rental, or one of our giant custom light shows such as the one we built and installed for the "Dynamite Disco" in Brooklyn. The "Sound and Light Columns" were also a popular holiday rental by the U.S. mission to the United Nations. They rented them -- and other "effects" from us from 1967 through 1971 -- I believe. Not sure about 72 or later as I had sold my interest and was already living in Los Angeles.

Oh yes: These columns also got rented by a number of "Off-Broadway" and "Off-Off-Broadway" productions. The one I recall was a truly bad "musical" called "Comb My Hair In The Light." Never heard of it? You are not the only one. Very few people did and even fewer came. It lasted 3 performances.

But yes -- 6146"s are good audio tubes -- especially when one bought them new -- Army surplus for $2 each at Rex Radio on Cordlandt Street. (The secret was the audio output transformers -- not the tubes.)

6146's were used in the old SAGE computer system. The SAGE system was a continental air-defense network commissioned by the U.S. military from 1963-1983. See http://www.thegalleryofoldiron.com/SAGE.HTM and scroll down for the 6146 paragraph. Apparently they were used for register storage.

I had 10 (count them) new GE 6146B's NOS that I couldn't give away at 1/2 retail price --- pair for $30.

Had to be a CBer type with a Kenwood rig converted for 11 meters. Being stupid, they burn up finals left and right, which is the reason that TV sweep tubes have skyrocketed in value.

In all my years, I've never seen a flat 6146, and only a couple gassy ones.
