View Full Version : The N2JMH Psycho Rover
From the site:
Quote[/b] ]Ham radio operators N2JMH Jim and N2WVK Todd constructed this amateur radio contest ROVER. Roving and hilltoping during contests won the rover many awards. the rover was equiped to cover all bands from 50mhz to 10 ghz and lazer light contacts. We operated modes didital,cw,fm and ssb phone. There is 2 full stations to accomidate 2 operators all bands. 3 rotating masts allowed for multiple contacts fast while grid hopping. One stack was fully rotatable while on the fly and multiple vertical antennas were switched for mobile operation. Miacom dishes for 5 and 10Ghz with homebrew copper waterpipe feeds yealded many u wave contacts. The surplus military 3 section crank up masts were cranked up using a dewalt drill. Once parked it took about 2 minutes to set up and begin high power long distance beaming of our signal. Heavy duty alternator and marine batteries allowd for high power amps on all bands. This video was recorded by Ev W2EV and was a snow coverd hilltop in western NY.

OMG that was hilarious !! You GO guys !!
Their operation looks great, although psycho in nature of course. What a rig. And they have a sense of humor too. Nicely done fellas. You both are hereby promoted to Majors. Major Rovers to both of you.
I've now almost seen it all. There's still a couple of people at work who I have not seen do any work yet....but we're almost there. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Well, it certainly does nothing to dispell the image of hams as uber geeks, but at least the setup does serve a valid ham usage, keeping it out of the hamsexy category. (Hamsexy I think applies more to whackermobiles.)
The video production is a bit over the top to me but then I realise I'm probably 20 years older than those guys, so I'm willing to blame the generation gap for my feelings.
As for the music . . . Limp Bizkit? That's kinda like Microsoft. What REAL man would name his company or band "micro" or "limp" anything?
My only real criticism would be the attrocious spelling and grammer on the introductory webpage. That makes hams look ignorant, an image too many already feel applies to us.

Nice setup. But who gave the crystal meth to the shooter? Christ, looks like whoever was behind the camera was major tweaking.

All things considered that's a pretty good engineering job. Especially the antennas...

I actually enjoyed watching that video ...looked like these guys were having a lot of fun. I bet they could make a lot of money contracting that setup to the U.S. department of Homeland Security.Or at least if they were parked they might be investigated by them. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yep, either participants or subjects of Homeland Security!
NEAT video, neat set up, makes the time the XYL and I sat in the car, in the rain, with a fiberglass pole and 3 element 2 meter beam look almost sane.

Serious outlay in Dollars here!!!! The ultimate Rover vehicle which hams all over the world can only hope to compete with. Roving in Cal is tough as too few exciting grids and lame bands. East Coast is the best place to Rove!

Wow - that's pretty serious stuff there. Nice to see such a clean setup, they sure did bucks-up for it. Wonder where they park something like that?
My thought of the vehicle I'd choose today for a Rover is the new Dodge Sprinter - it's a Mercedes 3 liter diesel in a tall body with room to stand up inside - you could so a similar number but it would not be 4x4.
Very cool job - I'm secure knowing I'm unlikely to ever get something quite like that. does look a bit like a non-covert intercept van though.

That was interesting.
I told my wife I would pimp out my Saturn in a similar fashion - I got 'the look', followed by "Hmm, that would piss off the HOA lady now, wouldn't it ... OK, if you leave your car in the driveway."
In jest of course, but we have a mutual hate for the head of our HOA, not just because I have to operate covertly :P

May I humbly suggest the old tower-mounted-on-the-pickup-bed trick? That usually drives the condo cops right over the edge.

Put it on a barge and take it to Scarborough Reef!!! Alot if people still need that one. Only the BIG GUNS worked the last DXpedition. I never even heard them, and they were on such a short time. But then, working on a card table above a rock awash with waves makes it tough alright!
