SAN JOSE -- More than 200 employees were forced to evacuate the headquarters of the online auction house eBay Wednesday after a suspicious package was found on the ground floor, authorities said.
San Jose police officer Jermaine Thomas said dispatchers got a call about the package at 9:24 a.m. A bomb squad was immediately sent to the scene with its remote-controlled robot and the evacuation was ordered.
The intersection of Bascom and Hamilton streets on the border between San Jose and Campbell had also been blocked off as authorities investigated the package.
"The bomb techs are on scene," San Jose Police Sgt. Nick Muyo said. "They're trying to decide what to do with it."
eBay spokesman Hani Durzy said the package was in the mailroom of one of nine buildings on eBay's San Jose campus. Durzy add that the evacuated workers were given the option of waiting outside, finding another building to work in or working from home
According to the San Jose Mercury, the incident is taking place about a year after someone set off a pipe bomb at another EBay office in North San Jose. No one was injured in that blast because of a lack of leads the investigation has been closed.
