I've just been looking through the RSGB (the UK's national society) news page and saw a 'DX news' entry for special event callsign PA20NAFRAS (active between 3 and 19 November to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Netherlands Air Force Radio Amateur Society (PI4NAF)). Do you think the callsign is long enough? I mean, I've seen callsigns with 3 or 4 letter suffixes before but 6 letters suffixes? LOL I wonder how many people mis-copy that!

Makes one wonder if they will work CW during this event, or if it will be only a phone operation. The call will prove more tedious for their own ops than for many interlocutors. On phone, no doubt, it will be "acronymized" as "PEEAYDWUNNYNAFFRASS," which is surely memorable.

Over the past ten years I have noticed more & more "special event" DX callsigns...........It used to be a big deal & generated quite a pile up. Not too much anymore.

The only special event station I have worked that has created a pile-up was GB5OQ (Golf Bravo 5 Our Queen) for the Queens Golden jubilee in 2002. Anything else is lucky to get a few european stations calling us in a row. GB400AA was good at times.

No kidding.

Now you have "special event" stations literally begging for calls.

Some of the "special events" are funny... Yep, it's like a menu every month to chose from and not everyone likes escargot...

Years ago when the Rolling Stones came to Minneapolis, I applied for & received the 1X1 callsign of WØW for this event. Made about 225 - 250 QSO's over two days with WØW.

Have had the callsign KØW two seperate times for something that I called. "Celebration of the Dairy Cow".........Look up these calls on the 1X1 vanity past callsign lookup if you are a non-believer. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
