Quote[/b] ]An alternative operating system for the masses
Our idea is to be a simple, user friendly, beautiful desktop for normal people.
Out of the box, just works!
We're creating an OS ecosystem that is complete. We come with all the software you need to browse the web, email, instant message... play movies, music, and connect to iPods... create and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, images... out of the box. Plug and play!
Bring on Google and other wonderful applications
We recommend Google for just about everything... Gmail, Gtalk, Calendar, Maps, Docs and Spreadsheets, and more. We'd like to welcome you to the idea that Google already is your "operating system."
Open source and other values
We thank the Ubuntu 7.10 community and Enlightenment community for their contribution to gOS and the world. Our dedicated team and passionate community of volunteers are commited to bringing our alternative OS to the masses... so people everywhere can enjoy a third, more affordable and attractive choice when shopping for a computer. To get ahead of ourselves, we're saying goodbye to closed software and the digital divide.

Quote[/b] ]We encourage developers to advance the currently limited driver support
No offense, I really like how clean the desktop looks, but I'm a bit leary of "limited driver support" in my OS. Also, it appears that this is build on Ubuntu, if that is true. Ubuntu supports boat loads of hardware, why isn't this the same?

From the David Liu interview article:
"Instead of utilizing applications on the computer locally, the gPC leverages online applications that are delivered via web browser, such as Google Docs and Spreadsheets. This is an absolutely brilliant idea. All you need is a fast internet connection (and a monitor) to use the computer."

I like to play with different distros of Linux, so I've downloaded and burned the image to disc. So far, it's been trying to load on an old IBM ThinkPad for about half an hour. I've loaded several live distros of Linux on this machine in the past, normally with no problem. So far, I can't say that I'm impressed.

Why is it that all the computers that are being sold at Wal-mart (among others) with Linux on them are a "boatload of crap"? Seems to me if one wants to get people to patronize linux, it should be on at least a HALF WAY decent computer.
And forget about your stuff being somewhere on the internet, you'll just be asking for trouble if you go that route.

I thought the whole Google online webapp thing is a joke anyhow. So would anybody else who's had more than 10 mintes of network secuirty training. As soon as Google gets nailed for losing or compromising somebody's sensative data, this too shall pass.
I don't think you have to worry about it becoming anything other than an "gee whiz" fad for the great unwashed hoard. Corporate america will not embrace this idea and as much as people like to claim that the IT industry owes it's existence to Mom and Pop internet user, it just isn't true.

I tried irunning the live gOS on two other desktop computers last evening. First one was the same as the laptop, just wouldn't work. That box already has a working Freespire Linux distro running on it that I haven't re-booted in months until I shut it down to try gOS. The 2nd box loaded gOS just fine. Once up, I went to see if I could configure the wireless network...no support. So gOS is pretty much worthless to me. I thought I might use it as a 'internet terminal' gor general net access at the FD, but without a wireless connection, it would be more effort than it would be worth. I did load a live distro of Ubuntu on that same box and it worked flawlessly.

The cheap Linux PC thing is a bit of a trend and apparently the first run of 10,000 units of the Everex PC has sold out.
ZDNet article (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=926)
I understand Everex plans to sell a cheapie gOS notebook too...presumably it'll have wireless support. Understand the price will be $300 for the gOS version and $400 for the Windows version.
You can apparently buy the motherboard used in this thing for $60. It uses a cheapie Via processor instead of an Intel or AMD.
Asus has also gotten into this game with the EeePC mini notebook. It sells for around $400 and runs a modified version of Xandros. It has a small 4 GB solid state hard drive instead of a normal notebook hard drive.

It continually saves a draft copy as you work on the document, just like Microsoft Office.
