The ARRL rules specify, among other things, a two digit code for the "first license issue date." I am wondering if, since I left my first license expire 50 years ago, and just this year got a new license, which number do I use for my exchange code, "55" or "07." I hope to participate in this year's Phone Sweepstakes and need this info. In fact, I really don't remember if I received my first license in late 55 or early 56. I guess that would make a difference if I have to use that date.

I don't think it matters which one you use, as long as you are consistent and use the same one for every contact.

Make one up if you like, as long as it stays constant from start to finish.

BQM:
In the "spirit" of the contest you should use 55 since 1955 was the first year that you had a license.
Now try having 1959 as your year of first license (my Novice Class is dated 15 May 1959 and I upgraded to General in November of 1959). During the SSB contest about 1 out of 10 contacts try to tell me that I am not "supposed" to give a signal report but the year of my first license. Of course they are suitably "embarrassed" when I come back "15 May 1959".

Thanks everyone. I did a bit of research and found it was indeed 1956 that I was first licensed as "KN9JVE" which was upgraded to "K9JVE" in late 1957. So I will be using "56" for the contesting.
Hope to hear a lot of you guys and gals out there.
Hugh - KDØBQM
You're correct, Hugh, 56 is the proper check to send.
It has been a few years since I operated SS seriously, but I was always amazed and impressed by the number of ops licensed in the late '50s that participate. It seems that for my year of license ('83) that very few participate by comparison. Another large group that I heard were from '76 to '79 or so. It's always fun to work the very newest licensees as well and good to see them on the air.
Who knows, maybe I'll get some time and play around in phone SS again. Kansas isn't really rare so I wouldn't be too sought after. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes it really is nice to have a different type of exchange and the year first licensed is rather interesting. I see very few out there like myself with dates in the 1990s. Of course that may be because I hunt and pounce rather than run a frequency.

Hi Glen
Yeah, I can appreciate your dilemma. I too frustrate some ops.
I have to send 73 for the year I was licensed and they come back wtih NR??
I go 73 again and they repeat...so I too, like you, have to spell it out..Sure makes for low QSO rate! Hi.
73 er, CUL Glen!

Instead of just sending the number, precede it with CK. That should let them know that you know what you are doing and have read the rules.
If the guy says NR?, he's asking for the serial number of the contact.

I don't know. This year it was the most requested fill during CW SS.

I almost always say "check five nine" and I definitely get the "you are not supposed to give a signal report" routine. Those who are clueless remain clueless!

Of course, as a 7 in ORG, that's to be expected. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes, he is.
Old Chip was rolling them in pretty well, too. He was at 972 when I worked him at 1846 Sunday.
Better the fill requests though, then to slow everybody down by signing /6.

I worked Chip as well. #I logged the exchange and then listened to him work a few more just to make sure I copied it all correctly as he was clipping along at a pretty quick pace.
On Edit:
Consulting the log, I got him as 902 at 1710Z.
I really wish they would allow foreign stations to take part in SS.
I was hearing North American stations on 15 meters CW working SS last weekend until well past 11:00 PM here.

Tom,
So that's where the propagation went. Worked a grand total of four stations on 15m here, between 1923 and 1935 Sunday.
I'd have no problem letting DX stations play in SS. Let "DX" be the 81st section.
73,
Bill
Surprising, folks found 15 to be long, very selective, and utterly worthless. Indeed, looking at the high band scoring, NOT one QSO appears to have been made on 10 meters this year.

I checked 10M a couple of times and not once did I hear a thing there. The 10M contest in December ought to be interesting.
Ummm....Going to take a pass on that one this year, thanks...

I heard abolutely nothing on 10. But I made 51 on 15M.
And I also believe DX should be the 81st Section. It would be a boon to Region II, especially. Good heavens! DX stations frequently comment how we swamp the bands with SS activity. Why not invite them to work the Sections with us? Does "contribute to international goodwill" sound vaguely familiar to anyone? They can't beat us, so let's invite them to join us.

I agree, DX for the 81st section.
