A couple of months ago I bought a new HP "all in one" to replace one that failed. Nice unit. It prints fast er and with better quality than the old one.

And I figured that, with the black ink cartridge costing about $15 woth sales tax, I was really saving money.

UNTIL I READ THAT EACH BLACK INK CARTRIDGE HOLDS ONLY 4 MILLILITERS OF INK.

Lets figure:

1 liter equals about 1.06 quarts.

3.77 liters equals 1 gallon or 4 quarts.

1 GALLON OF INK EQUALS 942.5 4-MILLILITER CARTRIDGES!

AT $15 PER CARTRIDGE, THAT'S $14,137.50 PER GALLON!

Look at it this way, Gillette makes their money selling their custom blades, not the razors they go in!

And beer, the price is going to jump because of a supposed shortage of hops or some other vital ingredient.

Try owning a color laser printer like I do: $990 to replace all the ink cartridges. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I think months back someone posted a story here about how manufacturers will start digitally encoding ink cartridges so if you use a third-party refiller you'll void your printer's warranty.

I am figuring perhaps 75,000 to 80,000 drops per gallon, and if I live to be 90 then I have more than 13,000 days left. What is the shelf life on LSD?

KLT years ago in Cedar Rapids, Drug Towne screwed up a coupon in the Gazette ... big time.

Read 88 cents per 6 pack of Old Milwaukee. Needless to say, we stocked up on Old Milwaukee ... they protested loudly, however the law is clear ... what is printed is the sales price. It was not the paper, but the stores that messed it up.

Another reason I went to Scotch some years ago..

If I'm going to purchase an expensive liquid then it had better be single malt.

HP has been coding the ink cartridges for their "business" injet printers for years. I'm not sure whether the product line still exists with the exception of the big printer/plotters, but those cartridges were coded with a date of manufacture.

If you put a cartridge in the printer that was older than six months the printer would refuse to operate, with a message that HP did this to prevent the customer from getting less than first-rate output.

My gripe was that we could never find a way around the roadblock; there was no way to say "I'll take my chances, just print already!"

It was especially aggravating because ink cartridges were supplied from a central warehouse and outside purchases weren't allowed. About three quarters of the units we got were stale on arrival because central purchasing didn't know about the expiration and had no real way of tracking that info.

After twenty five years of this I'm getting tired of IT vendor lock-in. It's worse than a bad marriage.

What I've always found hilarious is how many offices converted to computers to eliminate paper.

Funny, the printers where I work churn out more paperwork than existed before. Handwritten bill of ladings used to be 6 copies, but only one page. Now the printer details every item and prints out a book for each driver http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think we're killing more trees than ever before thanks to computers http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Sure, there is less mail in the mailbox, but the junk mail keeps that paper consumption up.

I think I've printed 4 pages in the past 6 months. But I'm sure the cartridge is designed to dry up if not used, so either way I'll have to get another.

Outlandish prices? Try prescription drugs. I know people that, if not for insurance, would spend 5 grand a month. The insurance makes it affordable. Only about $600.

Might actually be a good deal!

One doesn't know the concentration per drop, of course, but if it's pure, one drop would do the job. At 46,080 drops to the gallon, it comes out to less than 3 bucks a drop (or "hit" as was once said). About what it went for in 1968 (not that I would have known this myself, now, but I'd heard). http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Blood is incredibly expensive, depending on how it is extracted, and from whom.

There are stores that refill those ink cartridges and sell them at half price - what a deal! I'm told that Epson cartridges are the easiest to recycle, and Lexmarks are designed so they can't be reused. Office Depot is also selling recycled ones now.

Skunky beer'll do that to ya!

I'm on about the 6th or 7th refill of a Canon cartridge that I can't even remember when I bought. Which I use in a printer that was given to me.

My Epson carts take about 15ml when I fill them. 4mil sure isn't much. I will never buy an HP or Lexmark printer, but not sure the others are much better.

It''s shelf life is supposedly dependent upon how it is stored. In liquid form is is supposed to be best kept cool and protected from light.

Only if it's orange sunshine or windowpane or anything made by Owsley, not the fake crap that's around today.

About single malt....only Highland? #That's good, so are the Islay potables.

Printers sell dirt cheap because they make the big bucks on the ink and paper. #But don't forget that you're not paying for just ink. #You're paying for a new ink delivery system every time you buy a cartridge. #That's what keeps your printer printing as good as new forever. #Maybe the delivery system is made to work reliably for just as much printing as you get from one cartridge.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything made by Owsley today. Most of the acid kicking around today is bogus or something other than acid. There are very few makers of the genuine article these days.

Acid wes never that big in the parking lot behind the electrical supply warehouse where we used to hang out. But I knew this chick who lived on acid. She used to hang out in Queens NY and watch the swirling carousel in Forest Park (which has been restored by the way). #Believe me, if she could get the real thing she'd be tripping right now. But with the crud thats out there today, forget it.
