Wouldn't all Brits be happier if they lived north of the border?
Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party and Scottish First Minister recently seemed determined to stoke up separatism by promising free prescription drugs in Scotland. They also get free eye care and dental check-ups, and access to cancer drugs denied to patients in England.
Elderly Scots get free residential care while the English are often forced to sell their homes to pay for their care. Scottish students get free university tuition, while English undergraduates have to pay about £3,000 a year.
You can understand the English irritation. Pumped up with English subsidies, public spending in Scotland has doubled since devolution and will top £30 billion within the next three years. Why should the Scots get free drugs, when the English have to pay for their medicines? Won't this generosity ultimately be funded by the UK Treasury?
Divisions between the two nations were made more obvious by the creation of a separate Scottish Parliament in 1999,
which has powers over education, health, the environment and home affairs.
