I was just figuring the values of the resistors in the avatar of one of our esteemed members, and I CONFESS...to figure the values I had to use the traditional "poem" to remember which color means what. #

But...considering PC'ness, I guess I should've used spectrum colors.

Am I going to be arrested by the thought police for using the traditional method?

Should the color code be banned because it makes people think "bad thoughts?"

Is an avatar showing components using the color code appropriate these day, knowing that many, many people haven't been "reprogrammed" yet to NOT think of the traditional poem?

Normally a Ham who is active in the shop does not have to use one of the several poems to remember the color code. It becomes like a second language or you might say a 3rd language as CW is learned the same way.

OH!! That's right I forgot the 21st Century Ham does not learn CW, well maybe he can have the color code tatooed on his arm since his attention span is so limited !!

On the other hand with his also limited Technical expertise maybe he should stay out of the shop area for his own protection !! Just concentrate on shooting skip with the other CB'ers. # #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Do you mean the ditty that ends "Violet gives willingly"?

I dimly remember another mnemonic that ended with "buys very good wine", but I'll be hanged if I can remember the beginning!

Actually, the Resistor Color code IS RACIST!!! Look what they put for Zero, BLACK!!!! and One is BROWN!!! Then we have RED for 2 (Native Americans are up in arms!!) Orange for 3 (hmmmm who is orange? Maybe a combination of Asian and Native American?) 4 is Yellow (ANGRY Asians!!) Finally we get to number 5: Green. Only the Frogs and Alligators will be pissed off. Six is blue, maybe the folks from way up north in Canada and the North pole will turn blue when they see this. 7 should have been a SAFE color, Purple, but then we forget about TINKY WINKY, the Gay Teletubby who is purple so 7 is the GAY color code. 8 is gray, so here we are going after our Senior Citizens, AGEIST racism!!! Finally we get to 9, WHITE!!! Why is 9 last? Because all other races have priority over WHITES!!

I just knew there'd be a reply like this. Thanks, much for getting it over with early. As usual, your comments are totally appreciated.

Dude, whatever you're drinking or smoking.....

Put it down and BACK AWAY.

Equating resistor color codes to racism. Thats a stretch that....dang. Unbelieveable!

It should be unbelievable - notice the tongue in cheek?

Note to the unwary: Sarcasm and facetiousness lurk around every corner, waiting to pounce on you. Only by learning CW will you be able to defend yourself against their ravages...

PS: Non-sequiturs abound as well!

I use the "bad boys" thing, always have.

But...anybody remember the little "color wheel chart" that used to come with Heathkits? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Those were cool.

Man, they used to have -lots- of cool chart wheels, specialized slide rules, etc. about 20-30 years ago. That all went away with software, which is kind of sad.

Same with the data books, handbooks, and technical white papers the big companies used to almost give away. The IBM Redbooks still teach me a lot about computing, and the Agilent (actually old HP) white papers and tech briefs offer more to learn than I have lifetime left to learn it, but the days are gone when just reading a few manufacturers' promotional material was a good way to learn about practices in a new field.

BTW, my favorite toy of this kind is a Smith Chart circular slide rule which was passed on to me by my dad. The only problem is, I need to become more familiar with Smith Charts! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

That just doesn't have the ring that "Bad Boys" had.

It's no worse than the aviation-related one for determining which heading you should follow to track a course:

"True Virgins Make Dull Company"

(True Course +/- Variation +/- Magnetic Course +/- Deviation +/- Compass Heading)

There are others but I prefer not to be banned. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
