My free trial to XM online has expired, and I miss it. #But I still have it in the rental car, and wil get it for real when I get home. #There's no question that it's a great thing to have. #I'm completely sold.

Then it comes to online music.

I've posted before about what WPON is doing online. #To recap...

They play, commercial free, stuff from the late 40's to the mid 70's, with great technical quality, and with a mix that sometims blows the mind with the juxtaposition of songs back to back.

And, they do it completely gratuitiosly.

As far as I can tell, the do it 'cuz they love to do it, and will refuse any payment.

Some history --

When I discovered them, I was impressed that their programming was available to anyone, completely free. #There are no "Sign up now" or "Please contribute" words at the website:

www.wpon.com

The Link (http://www.wpon.com)

Moreover, I have emailed them, telling them that what they're doing is great, and I'm willing to support them financially. Most times, that offer was ignored, and when I finally got a response, well, it supported my impression that they don't need contributions. #What they're doing they do 'cuz they love it.

So...

Then there's XM, that is as good in their own way...

They offer OUTSTANDING programming for not a lot of money, and, is like what I said above, but available anywhere, anytime.

And what they're charging for the programming they offer is CHEAP!!! #Gedouttahere! #$100 or less a year for what they're doing? #That's nothing.

When I hear the kind of programming XM is doing, I'm utterly impressed with the time, talent, and expense that's gone into it. #It's as good as any Top 40 station from the 60's times and lot.

Guess what I'm saying is that traditional radio is being blown away on the 'net, and from space. #I think it's GOOD thing.

I get XM on direct Tv.

they charge about $10 a month for 100 channels.
thats ten cents a channel.

About 98 of the channels you can get the same stuff from terrestial radio.
I would like to get a single channel radio from XM,fixed tuning for the one channel.. actually 3 of them. 2 cars and the shop...
Thats 30 cents a month.. I would pay a $ a month for that.
The music I listen to cant be found on terrestial radio within 300 miles.

I have two XM receivers in my home but one also doubles as my mobile. I agree, XM is the cat's meow when it comes to music. I only wish they would improve their bit rate because my surround sound system really exposes the lack of information in the audio stream. Sounds great on two channels though. Not quite enough information for my Pro Logic II circuitry to work with.

When satellite radio began being advertised, I and many others laughed. We said, 'who would pay for radio'. Well, now it's the only radio I listen to.

I've had both XM and Sirius. I wound up going with Sirius. There was only 1 channel with 1 program that I liked which didn't have a similar counterpart on Sirius and I preferred the music channels on Sirius.

I agree with CSG that they should work on their compression technology. That is the only thing I really don't like about it. You tend to get used to it until you put on a CD or something, even regular FM, then you go back and realize how bad the sound quality is.

I hear they are talking of merging anyway, if it ever happens.
