Better get ready for the latest special event kicking off in the Scouting world. 50th JOTA is coming up on 19th October at 21:00 UTC. There are plenty of 50th anniversary special (GB50) etc; calls about so get yer ears on and work those scouts. I had the great pleasure to participate in a Scout event recently and it is very rewarding working with these highly motivated youngsters. 73 Max http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm looking forward to the event.
My club is doing a setup for about 150-200
scouts on Saturday the 20th.

I was also able to work GB100J a few weeks ago for the 100th anniversary of scouting.

Fun Stuff !!!!

C U on the 20th !

Mission District, San Diego, CA Council didn't have anything planned down here. #Am opening up my shack to Cubs and Scouts on the 20th from 1300L to about 1600L and let them try it out. #Last time I opened my shack to Scouts, it was in the field at the 2004 Fall Camporee in Rhode Island - over 40 Scouts made contacts! #We gave them each a certificate for it.

I count 29 1X1 Special Event callsigns with their event listed as JOTA. A good number of troops and scout camps have their own club calls, and they will use them.

We’ll listen for all of you.
LIX, we might have to use 80M, I’ll be listening for WA3COM

We are doing 2 stations.
One using a triband 3 element yagi, but the other will be a double Zepp slung from a flagpole as the center support.
(I'm a BIG believer in wire antennas. simple to construct and erect, and the WORK !)
I figure it should be great on 17, 40 & 80.
Plus, having scouts to shinny up the trees to anchor
the ends is a plus.

We will be on 80.
Good luck with your troop !!!

Bill,

I like wire too. It’s portable, adaptable to location, and yes it does work. Scout friendly too, nothing makes a bigger impression than having them use something that they constructed themselves. Right now, we are planning a single station using an inverted V OCF short dipole that’s cut for 20 & 40. The scouts will be assembling / guying the mast, and raising the antenna. No usable trees at our location. If I throw a tuner in there I’ll make it work on 80 and we are close enough to work without a high efficiency antenna.

Enjoy the event. With that many scouts you are going to be busy.

Hi everyone,

My Girl Scout troop (and maybe a few other troops) will be on the air from 2000 to 0000 GMT Saturday evening. We will try 40M and 20M SSB and PSK31 to see what's open out of Hawaii, but will also be available on APRS, under my call sign. Hope to hear from you!

I had a call from one of our club members who in turn had a call from the scout leader who informed us that they won't be doing JOTA this year as there have only been 3 scouts respond saying that they will be there. Apparently it's something to do with England getting to a Rugby (our form of 'american football') world final against South Africa this weekend and a lot of the scouts will be watching it instead http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

All I'll say is, listen out for GB50 SWN this weekend! So far I've had no responses from scouts saying they'll turn up, however I suspect they will just turn up.

Well, I hope they're not all watching the rugby!

Heard GB50BCS (??? not sure of call - Westminster) this afternoon at about 1530 Z, SSTV, but couldn't get back to him (because of locals calling CQ DX rather than working the guy). about 575 on SSTV hr in MD
Most of the JOTA SSTV stations have had really bad slant problems today, and haven't worked anybody yet.
SSTV is a cool mode, es hpe next year, folk will take the time to get is set up. SSTV is not a mode that most hams normally operate, but a nice clean, non-slanted sig is much easier to copy. Hope it works out better next year, but PSE get set up first.
[EDIT] - Probably the wrong thread, but I found this one.
