View Full Version : REAL OBSCENE TALK

I have only been a licensed Ham (Tech) for about three weeks and one thing I find disturbing is what I hear on 449.9375 while monitoring in Jersey City, New Jersey. I have heard some comments ranging from very disgusting, very rude, to very obscene. This has been happening between 9:30 and 10:15 in the mornings when I monitor in Jersey City. One of these guys also goes on transmitting by himself and makes the rudest comments without being in conversation with another ham. One Ham who dropped in left very quickly.
I haven't been on the air yet to transmit since I am looking for some good morning groups to start with. However, anyone not a Ham and listening to these guys will surely be discouraged.
You can email me and I can give you further details.
I find it hard to get these guys call signs since they mumble and say them rather fast. My hearing isn't what it once was. One call sign I heard distinctly when the one guy was talking obscenely by himself was listed as not being an active call sign.
Today 10/04/2007 wasn't that bad but it was starting and the guy had to leave for an appointment.
Listen in and let me know what you think. The main guy was complaining about the old fuddy duddies and FCC complaints made some time ago.
Is all of this unusual?
I want to add that of all the transmissions which I have heard, that this is the only one which I have not liked. Many great hams and many great conversations are available.
I haven't done any further research on this topic to see if this is a repeater etc....
I have heard a great many good Hams on this frequency and if you hear the Hams on this frequency, please don't judge them by my comments.
Maybe you can find out who the two bad guys are.

Best thing I can tell you right now is record the conversation you can hear. the more evidence you have the easier it will be to drop the hammer on them. Oh and welcome to QRZ!

Have you heard anyone try to correct them? It would most likely not work anyway. People like that are looking for attention and the more you protest the more they are likely to continue, so if a request to tone it down don't work just move on and don't argue with them. The only thing you could really do is make recordings of the incidents with details about location, time and frequency, and file a complaint with the FCC. They do bust people for this type of thing from time to time. It's quite possible they are not even licensed.

The best thing is really just to ignore them. If they don't get the attention they seek, they will get tired of talking to themselves. If it persists anyway then maybe a delivery to the FCC may be required.

Is it unusual? It seems to depend where you are. Some people complain that vhf/uhf is just terrible and others hear very little like this. Where I am in NYC I don't hear much of this type of thing. Everyone is usually pretty cordial. It's just like any part of life where you interact with others, there will be good people and morons. It only takes one or two idiots to cause trouble for a whole lot of good people.

449.9375 is NOT a usual or standard repeater frequency ! #440 mhz repeaters are normally spaced every 25khz or 449.900, 449.925, 449.950, 449.975 etc.

Looking at (3) NYC Metro internet based repeater listings, including MetroCor coordinating body, this repeater is unknown. #The .9375 frequency sounds Motorola'ish whose Maxtracs and others can be programmed with oddball frequencies.

I know of a repeater on 449.975 in Murray Hill, NJ that could easily be copied from Jersey City. Heck I can key it up with 1/2 a watt in Carteret.

It may very well be a simplex channel in that area. In any case, the best thing that can be done is to record their conversations, then get a few other hams together to triangulate their positions (fox hunt), then turn all that information over to the FCC and let them run with it. This is how we were able to silence a couple of "squirrels" in Houston.

A little research reveals the repeater calls are: N2YLD/R located in Times Square (Manhattan) and the PL is 141.3. It is linked to other repeaters on Staten Island. It has an echolink node # 168188. They have a website with information that can be found on QRZ.COM by typing in the call letters: W2RJR or go to:

You ask is this usual? No, not in my experience. Once in awhile you may have someone who is a bit careless and accidentally lets an obscenity slip by, but by no means is that usual. I noticed on the website the WH linked to, that this repeater is on Echolink (W2RJR-R node #168188 for those who are playing at home). That means that the people on the repeater could be anywhere on the internet. They might not even be licensed Amateurs.

Those who suggest that you record this and contact the FCC are right. That's good advice and probably the best way to handle this.

Welcome to the hobby and welcome to QRZ. But no, it's not normally like this.

If it's EchoLink, you can see who the remote users are if you're the sysop or anybody else linked into the net. Right now, there's a KI4 there. I announced myself on the repeater, but didn't get any answers yet, and it sounds quiet.

The sysop's gateway automatically logs all connections, so there would be a record of the people who were connected that way. The system log shows the IP address of the connecting party, too, which should make it fairly easy for the authorities to track them down.

Thanks for the responses. I won't put that much effort in tracking these guys but I will put a recorder on Monday. If it continues I will send out the tapes to the FCC. Your leads gave much insight into linked repeaters and echo link and more. THANKS.
HAMS are really great people!!

As Ed would say ,hit the easy button.

who cares? TURN THE DIAL! if you don't like the topic of conversation, it only makes sense to listen to something else...

Maybe you're hearing the goodfellas talking business. They've been known to use colorful language.

After all, it is New Jersey...didn't you ever watch "The Sopranos"?

Don't feel bad around Nashville Tennessee it's like that on a certain 220 repeater the owner was warned twice but they still do it
