This is great, my kids play these online games and they like to talk to their friends.

According to this post http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin....=170167 (http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=170167) echolink is not ham radio, so now I will have my kids and all their friends download echolink and talk to each other with echolink for free and they do not even have to be licensed!!

This is the best thing since sliced bread http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No cell phone bills,
No studying for a license,
No home phone bills being run up,

Its a win win,

There are other programs instead of echolink. Skype comes to mind.

Besides, when I setup echolink, I had to verify my callsign to use. How did a non licensed person verify their non existent ham radio credentials to be able to use the software?

Sliced bread? Maybe that's one of the first examples of "dumbing down" in society in general...

Are you sure it's echolink? GAE is correct.Echolink will not allow access to the system until a valid Amateur radio license is indeed validated for the callsign registered. And yes, echolink does access radio equipment so linked

What's so great about sliced bread? Depending on the use, I like my bread sliced in different thicknesses. For french toast, a one inch slice soaked overnight is best. (actually challah bread is best for that use)

Sliced bread is for the lazy, unmotivated individuals who refuse to learn the skills required to use a knife... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Yes, but once you use the knife, don't you have sliced bread at that point? If the bread is sliced, it is sliced!

Well yes, I presume at some point in time, a Neanderthal put a knife to a loaf of bread... and society has been dumbed down ever since! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

If you disagreed I was going to have to call in a a Russian or French person, as they pretty much are the experts on bread as far as I can gather.

Sliced bread is overrated. I like breaking off chunks by hand, then schmearing the butter or whatever on that.

Or I just gnaw in from the end. That way, nobody else messes with your loaf.

Easy. The knife. Men were gleaners and hunters before they became farmers. They learned to bang rocks to make sharp edges before they learned to grind grain.

Thanks for asking that question! I knew my Anthropology degree would prove useful some day!

Well you can always make up a call or bootleg one. Of course W6GQ could always be the control op at his QTH but his kids friends scattered around the country probably do not have someone in the house to act as a legal control op. Not a real good idea. I wonder how much of this might actually be going on as it involves Echolink.

W6GQ shows his gross ignorance of what Echolink really is by his posting.

While Echolink "could" be set up as a simpleton "chat room" like he seems to think it is, It is mostly for linking RF radios (-L Stations) And RF Repeaters (-R Stations)
Those links may be via the twisted pair like many think, OR via satellite RF, Broadband fiber optic, etc.

And others are correct. You must have a verified callsign to use it.
Abuse of the system? #I suppose there might be some, But I will bet money there is a LOT LESS abuse of Echolink than what is going on 75 meters!!!!!!!!!
Listen up there some evening to hear abuses! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

This is total bullcrap. HF by nature is a few people heard by alot of people. Echolink is alot of people heard by a few people. When I traveled I camped on Echolink nodes in my hotel at night and 90% of what I heard was connect, kerchunk a couple times, disconnect. 3% was connect, say something off color, disconnect. 5% was connect in the middle of a QSO, tie up the QSO with inability to configure their computer properly, then disconnect. MAYBE 2% of connects were productive conversations.

Oh I forgot to add the "!!!!!!!!!!!" for over dramatization!!!!!

Its invasive by that nature. In the middle of a QSO with someone, I unkey and get "BLAH BLAH SO AND SO CONNECTED." So then the guy I'm talking to continues our convo. He unkeys, and we get a nice large, 20 second belch, then "BLAH BLAH SO AND SO DISCONNECTED."

Technology. I love it!

I don't think W6GQ was trying to put down Echolink, he was saying that if it isn't radio (as stated in the thread that he linked to) than he would just get his kids to start using it. I think he was being factious though. Anyhow, I see nothing wrong with echolink as a method of communication. I do not think that it is as fun as radio to radio as opposed to echolink repeater to computer or vise versa.

However, echolink isn't the end of radio, it is a program that was written (as K0RGR's signature says... it gives life to dead repeaters) as yet another means to communicate. It is useful for some and fun for others and some (like myself) generally do not use.

I just had a really nice QSO with a fellow in Sherwood Forest, England via EchoLink. The fellow on the other end was disabled, and I am for the time being. We had a nice half hour chat.

It's ironic that all my outdoor antennas went bye-bye this morning too. We're getting the place ready for sale and the first thing we were told was to get rid of the antennas (by a realtor who is also an old-time ham!). So, all but the dual-band vertical are gone, and the vertical is going this weekend - to become somebody's repeater antenna.

However, I am not planning on being EchoLink bound forever. I am planning the next QTH. My wife has suggested that we buy a smaller house with a detached garage, and build a hamshack in the middle to join the two. I think that's a great idea! I am just waiting to order the 70 foot self-supporting crankup! I want to be able to have a nice ragchew with Sherwood Forest on 20 meters.
