20 and 40 meters both good bands but don't forget about the best keep secret in Ham Radio...30 meters! 30 meters has the best of both 20 and 40 for propagation, has less noise, shorter antennas than 40 or lower bands, is always open somewhere and good DX many times...give our only dedicated digital low power no contesting band a try!

Don, you are absolutely right. Quite often the 30 metre band is in better condition than 40 metres but there is just nobody using it !
I first used this band with Pactor, for some reason Pactor went out of fashion and I was talking to myself calling CQ.
So, 14 years later, same band, but using PSK and how are things ? Just as dead as they were 14 years ago !
Maybe there is more activity in the US but in Europe there's more activity in a crematorium !

30 has been my main hang out for many years. I wish you would keep our secret. Now everyone will want to work it! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif #

oops, I typed 40 instead of 30m. edited to read correctly

G0GQK,
Sorry but I think the folks over in Europe need to pass the word around and give 30m a look over! We have a couple from your area but they get conditions to US but say that in Europe the 30m band is under used and needs some ops, maybe you can start the fire that direction!
Well I would have to say a year or two ago that I would spend hours using PSK or other digital modes on 30m and not get much of a response. I had just a hand full of PSK contact on 30m then.
The last few months things have picked up and again for a band that is our only digital band low power non-contesting band that offers both world of 20 meters and 40 meters propagation I don't understand why Ham skip over this band and for sure at the bottom of the cycle. This is a great band!
Below some information again:
http://www.projectsandparts.com/30m/
(our spot page has helped pick up some action...it keeps up to 250 spots on that page)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/30meterPSKGroup/database
(we have a database of the spot data for just one month last month and it has over 1,000 spots in the database...not bad, yes some action on 30m)

GE,
I thought I might post to the members here that I really do believe that we are seeing and will continue to see an increase of 30m digital activity. My hope is that if we keep at it and get the word out that by fall/winter this activity will only increase more!
I don't have a lot of spare time but I do try to get in on 30m a few times a week for a few hours if possible. I also don't have a big station and have used from 1w to 5-10w qrp to most of the time 20w into my vertical butternut or loop antenna (also have made a number
of contacts with inside attic loop, my gutter, and a random wire just below the ground level inside the basement). Lot's of fun playing around and I have had good ragchew's with a number of you, thank you.
Here is the log of sorts just from the last couple months (Aug/Sep07) and/or some numbers just to let you all know the 30m band is far from dead for PSK or other digital modes (again some of your logs will be much
better to see as I have limited time, sorry):

So, although this is not such a big deal it is to me because it shows that we do have some activity and a year ago at this time I think I only had about 10 or so 30m PSK or other digital mode qso's in the log for 30m. Thanks to all for participating here.

so why are there so many digital ops between 10.110 and 10.115 tonight. that is prime CW DXing space. Digital ops already have half of the band, do they need our (cw ops)space too? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Minton n0nwo,
I would have no idea why there are digital ops on 10.115, I agree with you. I would not suggest or promote folks using 10.110 and/or up to 10.130 for digital modes...from what I know most digital activity I know or promote is from 10.130 to 10.142 (I think 10.130 to 10.139 wider digital modes and narrow psk/ect at 10.140 or slightly above). Sorry but I don't know who or what digital mode you are talking about there on 10.1105 and again I agree with your comment that according to band plans:
30-Meters 10mhz
10.100 to 10.150 CW
10.106 QRP CW calling frequency
10.130-10.140 RTTY / Data
10.140-BPSK31
10.140-10.150 Packet
that is cw portion of the band and you are correct so you will have to ask someone else that question. Gl on the band and yes your other comment on keeping 30 meters a secret is good but really I can't understand why it is such an under used band so maybe it will be keep a secret since no one seems to try to work it as often as 20m or 40m....thanks for the reply Minton.

30M is OK. However, we are restricted to three tiny windows on that band and we can only operate on a special permit from the Portuguese "FCC" (ANACOM).
Our frequencies are: 10100-10108, 10118-10120 and 10133-10150 KHz, max 500W. If you hear a CU station on some other 30M frequency, he is either illegal or does not have the special license. Also, if you work someone CUx/homecall, he is operating without permission. ANACOM does not allow CEPT or any other reciprocal licensees to operate on 30M.
I spent several days this spring calling CQ on RTTY before I got any response and the first guy that came back was a JA station, most surprisingly, since JA is one of the tougher directions from the Azores.
