I have recently decided to buy the new FT-950 for my fixed station HF radio. The issue now is a friend has recently thought about buying a new rig and either trading in his Mark-V or sell it to me. #The Mark-V is absolutely MINT, and has all the SSB filters, along with the INRAD Roofing filter. Digital Voice Keyer, and optional SP-8 filtered speaker. #I'm not sure exactly what the INRAD is or the digital voice keyer but it sounds like a nice radio. #From what I understand of it the only thing I won't be getting from the Mark-V that the 950 has is 6m's. #What would you do? #Thanks for your input!

I'd go with the mark 5. If you want to play with 6meters it really would make sense to buy a extra rig for it so you can just leave it on the call frequency during the sporadic e season.

The mark v with all of the inrad filters is a amazing rig.

I operated on a Mark V Field during TQP for about an hour on 20 meters. The radio has a great receiver, and while I didn't make use of the second receiver that is a great plus. The real nice thing about the Mark V Field (and I am going to assume the Mark V can do the same) is that if I so desired I could listen to both receivers at the same time. This could easily come in handy while running on one frequency and trying to chase mults (if you want to get into contesting).

You said the Mark V was in mint condition, I say go for it. As N4BLD pointed out, having a dedicated 6 meter radio would be the ideal thing.

The FT-950 IS a sharp looking radio (it even allured me) but it does not have two receivers and look at the front panel, there are almost no KNOBS!! Everything is by menu!

Don't be a fool, take the proven winner.

It's like comparing apples and oranges - the Mark V and the 950 aren't in the same league. If you're not into chasing DX or contesting, then the Mark V has all kinds of excess capability that you probably won't utilize.
