Recently ( today) made a post in a thread I started. I came back a while later and found that a Word had been changed in my post and the thread locked
I have to ask WHY ? I did no wrong. I posted No wrong.
The thread was about being threatened in emails from some people here on QRZ.
This particular person ( and his friends) have a history of threatening other users here on QRZ via Email. I am NOT the only one. I have been receiving private Emails from others that have had the same threats and harassments from these people I think it is time that Fred and the Moderators take the high road and punish these users that threaten others. I have the Emails to back up my accusations. To Lock the thread and edit the posts is NOT called for. Is the Secret Squirrel back ??
NO, These Email threats are NOT coming from Canada.
they are coming from jerks ( QRMers) right here in the USA
I will be MORE then happy to publish WHO they are and provide the Emails if needed. I am sure the others that have been threatened by these wanna be thugs will do the same if needed.
Don't be surprised if this Thread disappears also. the Secret Squirrel may be Back !!

Hello.
I have had no such trouble, so I can not relate.
The reason the thread was locked was concerns over where it was going.
QRZ is but a mom and pop operation, the last thing we need at this point is a legal issue.
Even if it is nothing more than to simply appear in court, that is too much.
Everybody has a day job, something that pays the bills.
People are aware of your plight, but the question now is, why did you not come forth to the QRZ powers to be?
If you feel that a moderator could handle this, why not post an email or such to him to begin with?
And, to make this clear.
The opinion expressed is not the policy of QRZ, its staff, or employees thereof.

I am sure the Moderators have been aware of this for sometime now !
But, If I follow your Lead, WHICH moderator do I forward it all to ? Tom? Terry? Glen ? Dave ? Fred himself?
You see my problem !!
Maybe I should just Post the names and calls of those who threaten along with their Emails ... It is against my principals but maybe is needed for everyone to see how evil they are !

Gordon, I've had a half dozen of my posts "vaporized" lately. To be fair, I receive an explanation in the form of a PM in most cases, especially from one moderator in particular.
I respect what they do, as it's a balancing act trying to enforce the site rules fairly. Like everything else, some of these guys (and gals) are better at it than others.
When this happens, I reply politely, and make any requested changes. I also will not hesitate to offer my opinion of the incident in question, but not in a manner that escalates the situation.
Hopefully, you too received an explanation for the action taken. If you didn't, then obviously the edit was performed by one of the moderators who hasn't the time to deal with us little people. I very much appreciate the communications I receive here when I'm being a pain in their lower intestinal regions. I only wish all the moderators would use the same approach.
It is most difficult to correct something that is perceived as being contrary to the rules when you are left guessing as to what the offense was.
That's my $20.00 (+ applicable taxes and fees ...) worth.

While I greatly value the site, and willingly support it, the moderation is uneven, at best. That variability leads to a confusion as to what is acceptable in some cases.
We all have seen threads locked down too quickly and for causes that would better receive a warning and a correction. The worst form of moderation is that which "anticipates" a problem, and I strongly suspect that is the errant reasoning in this instance.
Alas, moderation is, at best, a thankless task. Given the emotional energies that often animate discussions on this particular forum, it is also a necessary one. In the grand scheme of QRZ, I see no easy solution that would satisfy both sides of an issue like this one.
There should be an explanation, however, of just what sin was committed by Gordon (or another poster, perhaps) and just why the thread was locked down. Failing such a revelation, there is no adequate means of safely determining the edges of the "demilitarized zones" that interpose themselves betwixt that which is sanctified and that which is verboten.
My point here is that without such explanation, the situation is likely to repeat; clarification might tend to mitigate future breaches.

I think you were making a mountain out of a molehill at the very beginning.
A threatening e-mail is worthless as a legal threat. #If you fear bodily harm or physical harm to your home and property, there is recourse by reporting the threat to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
What I don't understand is why you even responded in the first place. #Did the e-mailer have some substantive justification to support his action? #If I had received such an e-mail I would have deleted it without further thought. #If it threatened bodily harm or physical harm to my property, I still would not have responded, but I would have saved it.
As to locking down the thread, well, I also agree that may not have been justified. #The moderation on the 'Zed is uneven. #I have on at least two occasions posted calling for more transparency in that process. #Without consistancy, there is no way for anyone to know for sure what is considered acceptable and what is not. #I never received any response from any of the moderators to my comments.
My two cents worth.

Gordon,
If you are being threatened or are having trouble here on QRZ you are welcome to PM me anytime and I will do my best to assist you. I can not promise that I can solve the issue myself but I can promise that I will try. The only exception is if you plan on posting all of my PM's on another website then I will deal with problems in open forums.

You state the obvious. The issue has never been one of failing to understand the need for moderation, nor one of disputing the rights of the moderators to intervene. The topic at issue is one of understanding why a moderator took the action he or she took so that we might all benefit from the clarity such an exposition would bring to future posts in this forum.
I suspect, however, that no such elucidation will be forthcoming, since offering such explanations seems to be regarded as a "sign of weakness" or one of "capitulation," and once circled, the wagons must remain secured against any show of impuissance. That is, of course, a ludicrous interpretation to put on such a request, but I would wager on that square.

Dear Luke, if you consider by my post that I was somehoe DEFENDING stonewalling in lieu of providing a clear, concise explication of the standards and why they were applied, I most emphatically do not.
I believe this instance was overly hasty; I saw no reason to lock the thread, and I have strong suspicions about the origin of the clamp. Should my suspicion be borne out, it would not be the first time rampant nannyism has led to over-reaction.

Not at all Albert! We're in total agreement here. I was suggesting, as you have, that the approach used here by the moderators has ample room for improvement, especially in the area of communication.
They will do as they see fit, though. I've hoed this row before, and it always fails to produce. It's as if suggestion and constructive criticism aren't very well received.
Apparently they feel their formula for success here is infallible, and there's little reason for them to mingle among the unworthy.
EDIT: I must note, to give credit where due, that two of the moderators here are excellent communicators, and go above and beyond their assigned duties to offer assistance. No need to name names, as they know who they are.

I have never been threatened by anyone here on QRZ, nor have I ever threatened anyone else. Perhaps that is because I believe in the opposite of what Teddy Roosevelt said (with his softly speaking - big stick policy)...So I speak big and carry a twig.
Before there was a QRZ ham radio ragchew group....
When I posted my opinions such as "Ham Radio nedds more classes." I had my life threatened by a ham who was a regular on the old ham.radio. amateur. policy forum on Deja (before it wass Google.) I later learned that the guy who had threatened me was very depressed. He had lost his wife. She died as the result of an accident that he had blamed himself for. He had other serious problems but he used ham radio and messaage posting as theropy to try to forget his troubles. After I learned more about him, we began to communicate with mutuial respect.
w2ilp (I Like People)...especially hams...and I respect them even when they call me a pinko liberal...which I am not exactly...Well hardly ever.
